Exact match req\'d for replacement engine?

I need to replace my engine in a 2000 beetle. I'd like to keep the replacement as simple as possible, but I've seen some 2002 and 2003 engines for sale and would rather go with a younger engine. Is it a plug and play swap to replace an '00 with an '03? I've read other posts about ECU pin differences, but I'd be using my original ECU. tks.

I am no expert on engine swaps, but I am pretty confident that they are all interchangable from 2000-2003. The block & attached parts should all be the same. The only differences would be in certain electrical plugs that were changed for the 2003 model year. The EGR & boost solenoids are two that come to mind. But those are on the firewal, so should not need to be touched. There are probably others too. Since you will probably only be changing the block & things attached to it, you may only have to change a few plugs. Like the coolant temp sensor & #3 injector plugs? The pins should be the same, so its just a matter of extracting the wires from the plugs & installing new plugs. Other than that, I don't know of any real obstacles. But again, I am no expert. I am sure someone who has done an engine swap on these cars can give you more tips.

I don't know how big a deal it is, but the newer models have an immobilizer system. I would assume that is all controlled by the ECU, and if you connect an newer engine to an older ECU, you shouldn't have a problem. You also have to watch with what wingnut mentioned...some of the connectors were changed a little.
