i've got a 2011 sportwagen TDI manual transmission. i have had on occasion an engine stumble, almost like a miss. It occurs very infrequently and seems entirely random. In the 3300 miles, it has happened maybe 10 times. No CEL or other symptoms and can't be duplicated intentionally.

any thoughts or similar experiences?

Mine has done that once or twice but when I first start up AND the engine is completely cold.

It always went away in a couple of seconds.

There is an ECM update available to address this issue. I believe it's update 23h1. Free at the dealer. Takes about an hour.

ECM update

Would they have not done this update prior to delivery of vehicle only 5 weeks ago or is it a brand new update? What is the cause of the stumble that they addressed in the new ECM update and what does the update do to address it?

Thanks for the help. I was hopeful that I would be doing all of my own service/maintenance and did not intend to go back to the dealer unless for warranty needs. Looks like I may need to head back sooner than later.

There is also some subtle "irregularities" in running as the engine is warming to its optimal operating temp. These are linked to the various emissions systems adapting to the warming exhaust gases. I have perceived them as a miss, or a light stumble at cruising or light accel. These are normal.

If you search the forum, you'll find a number of threads discussing this.

Mine does the same but only when cold/warming up. Very noticeable, IMO, and not something that should be considered normal.

Doing a Malone tuning soon. Wondering if that will fix the problem.

My car will NEVER see the inside of a VW dealer service station again, unless that is my last choice. Those guys are a bunch of idiots.....plan and simple.

That's an awfully big generalization to make to insult the intelligence of every VW mechanic working for a dealer. I have no affiliation with any VW dealer, I am not a mechanic…so feel no personal offense…but I find the sentiment you express repulsive.

Joe

The update did not fix this issue in my '10 JSW.
I agree it was not a 100% fix but it did help. Engine idles smoother and lowered idle rpm. Most of the stumbling at 1700 rpm is gone. Some cold engine stumbling still exists. Maybe they'll get it right next update. Just like MS Windows I guess.
