With the glow plugs removed, in neutral, I can't rotate the engine using a socket on the crank. When I crank it, the starter can't turn over the engine. Replaced the starter, still can't move the engine.

I lifted both front wheels off the ground, put it in gear (tried all forward gears) and the wheels just spin and the engine won't rotate. Timing belt is ok.
With the wheels just spinning, I'm starting to think the clutch came apart.

Hope this explains my situation.
Any thoughts are welcome..

There are just too many to list....
What happened prior to this? Was it run out of oil? Was the DMF allowed to completely come apart and wedge itself into the bellhousing?

will the engine rotate in either direction using the crank bolt? even a little bit? if it will go backwards, and then forwards but only so far and comes to a sudden stop, you will want to start with pulling the valve cover and inspecting the cam/lifters, if you see any ugliness in there (spiderweb cracks on lifter tops, domed lifters, dished lifters, cam lobe damage)

you will then want to pull the head and return and report back what iyu find.

Thanks for the replies.
It didn't run out of oil, it still with 360k didn't use oil.
Can't rotate the engine either direction very far.
Can't figure why I can turn the passenger wheel freely with it in gear..
Wondering if the clutch came apart.
I'll pull the valve cover and report back.
Again, thanks for the replies..

Pull the clutch slave cylinder and have a peek into the bellhousing.

If both wheels are off the ground, the differential will allow the wheels to turn freely even if its in gear.

Both front wheels are off the ground. Ok that explains it. Couldn't turn the passenger wheel (clockwise) with the driver's side on the ground, even in 5th gear..

Thanks for that, I'll pull the slave cylinder tonight. I was wondering how to get a look inside the bell housing. I'm hoping that's the problem. The clutch is only 4 years old but dual mass. I hope it's the clutch coming apart and not the engine!!
You guys are great!

When did you first notice that the engine would not turn - driving down the road and the engine stalled? was the car sitting for a period of time and siezed when you went to start it?

How does the clutch pedal feel? does pressing the clutch pedal change the behaviour at all? (Can you turn the wheels when the clutch pedal is to the floor?)
