Riding along and engine died. Glow plug icon was on and message said "service now". After a few seconds, engine started but after 3-5 minutes died again and had to be towed to dealer. Searched the forum but most of the posts are from 2011. I wonder if there's any new ideas on this problem.

In the middle of summer.....in the south.....????

Won't be the first time I've heard of it happening.
However if that is indeed the problem what's not common is a flashing glow plug light...
HPFP!!!

This is unfortunately the most likely cause of the problem.

There's a FAQ sticky in this forum about it. It also links to other threads:

My recommendations:
#1: make 100% sure you have the misfueling guard installed. You can check this by opening the fuel filler...
With guard installed:

Without gaurd:

Step #2: have it towed to your local vw dealership since the HPFP is covered under extended warranty (ONLY if the misfueling guard is installed).

More info on the warranty here:

Let us know how it works out for you!

The code that was set was P2146 which is "fuel injector group “A” supply voltage circuit is open". The dealer wants to replace the wiring harness with no warranty that that will solve the problem for about $1200.
After deleting the codes the problem did not recur, even with moving about the harness, and the engine is running fine. I drove the car home without any trouble and will probably turn the car in this October.

What the what?! 0_o

Sounds like a typical "let's just toss parts at it until we fix the problem". Trade in is the best idea.
