engine fires, revs quickly on its own then shuts off

Hi folks. Started 2001 Golf tdi up this morning and drove for about 5 minutes. Parked it for 15 minutes. I tried to start it. It turned over normally, fired normally, but then the engine reved up quickly to 2500-3000 then immediately shut off. I tried this 10 times with same outcome.

Also there was a "clunk" sound from the engine on a few of the attempts. Timing belt looks normal.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Fuel pump? No obvious leaks...

Oil has been spitting out of EGR for "awhile"...

Disconnected MAF and hose running to EGR...no improvement.

I'd check to see if you've got a bunch of oil pooled up in your IC piping, you might be sucking in some extra "go juice," especially seeing as you're reporting getting oil spitting out of your EGR valve (might be a seal leak between the valve and the intake and not an internal seal to the EGR valve itself).

When was the TB last changed?

Any smoke happening?
