Electrical Gremlins - looking for help

[axnels2]

in the last couple of days my JSW started acting strange: lights coming on for no reason, doors wont open, key wont turn. I resorted to unplugging the battery and after that things appear to work better.

I cleared the codes but central convenience issues still happening. Is my CU going out? Expensive item to replace I hear....

I should have provided more details. A couple of days ago the remote would not unlock my doors. I had to use a key. Replaced a battery in the keyfob all seemed fine. Yesterday when I got into a car , headlights came on and the hazard blinkers when I tried to start the car. it started fine. This morning I could not unlock the car at all so I used the key to unlock my door. When I tried to start the car, the starter would turn the engine but it would not start. The lights and the radio came on too. I tried pulling the key out at that momement and it would not go back to the unlock position......

I ended up disconnecting the battery and after reconnecting all worked fine... I cleared the coded but the convenience module came back.


The car electrics have not been touched in 3 years. I have an after market radio thats been there about 3 years. A disabled fuel door that stopped working. I disconnected the fuel door lock motor. I noticed door locks sometimes make a grinding sounds but seem to work fine. Nothing else unusual.


One more thing I forgot to add: it also has aftermarket fog lights. I noticed that one has condensation in it.... Its not broken and works fine. The lights are about 3 years old.

Try disconnecting both battery cables and touch them together for about ten seconds. Then reconnect the cables and start the car and clear faults and then check to see if any come back. What your doing is a static discharge of the electrical system. I've seen it fix a lot of weird electrical issues.

There are several faults about fuel tank control and driver's doors.
Have you checked the wiring harness inside the boot, driver's door for possible damage?
Things might be shortening there.

the fuel tank I know about. I have disconnected that locking motor cause it got me stranded one time... The door, on the other hand, I investigated and did not find any broken wires. I will look again just to make sure I did not miss anything...

After a few months and a couple of occurrences of my car "locking" itself up I found the source of all my issues... I had a loose wire on the fuse box in the engine bay, that would wreck havoc on my electronics and CAN-BUS. It got so bad that at times I could not even connect with VCDS. Thank you all that contributed to this thread.

if you are looking at the fusebox/breakout panel from the front of the car, it would be the 5th from the left.

My panel looks a a little different with no fuses/labels , but in your picture it would be an 80 amp. Perhaps due to date of manufacture been different. Mine was build in 02/09.
