I basically got a 2002 Beetle TDI disassembled in a box.I got it all put back together and running except for one problem. If i hook the EGR vacuum hose up the engine will shut down.If I do get it to run it won't run over 10mph belching black smoke. If i disconnect it the car will run but has little power I guess limp mode.I have checked for vacuum leaks and found none.My vacuum gauge says I'm pulling 27lbs.I swapped out the egr control valve and same results.I checked the turbo everything looks good rod moving up and down.
Disconnected MAF no change.Swapped MAF no change.Intake manifold spotless.I have searched this site and found one other problem like mine but the post was unanswered.Does it sound like I have a bad EGR valve or am I missing something. The car sat over 5 years without a battery in it could it be the the ECU needs an adjustment I do have a vag-com.
Also showing these codes which I suspect partly because I don't have the EGR hooked up.#19561 ,16618,16786 Thanks

Egr shutdown

Static timed before putting engine in car and set with vag-com by instructions posted on this site.On the graph it shows right on 70 and says normal but advanced then will jump momentarily above line to 72 then drops back down. Thanks

Sounds like you may want to double check your vac hose routing. EGR, whether open or closed shouldn't shut your engine down. ASV maybe... Here's some info.

If it has been sitting without running for 5 years, the injectors are probably gummed up. It might be worth having them cleaned and set back to specs.

I been going over the vacuum hoses all day today.I swapped the N18 valve out with one off my Jetta and had the same results.I have traced vacuum hose several times by the diagram you provided.Everything is right ASV is open and operating properly.I pulled the hose for the EGR off my 2000 Jetta and there is a vacuum on that hose at idle just like the Beetle.I put my Mighty Vac on the EGR valve and pump and it shuts it down.pulling hair out.Thanks.Will be deep cleaning injectors
