EGR Disabled

Hi Everyone,

I have a MK4 with a tuning box and alot of little extras. I need to know more information on EGR disable. I do blow smoke on heavy accellation and early morning start-ups. Why are TDi car owners disabling it? Will I ever trip a code? Will I see more power by doing this, any draw backs or is this a win win like chopping the muffle off? Any input for people would be great. On FAQ it just tells me how and really not the why behind this. Any help will help me out. I'm not one to touch a lot of computer setting so this is why I'm nervous.
Thanks

The main reason for disabling the EGR is to prevent the intake from becoming clogged.

davey, it's not really a big deal and can be changed back in 2 seconds if you decided it was necessary.

So basically, by doing this procedure it will keep my intake clean prevent build-up so there is always max power. EGR I assume is for the emmisions of Nox, my next question was why is this turn on, but I think I answered it. State emmissions!

Correct about the emissions.

Reducing the setting with a VAG will basically prevent the EGR from opening (or at least reduce how often it does)...this cuts down on the amount of hot, burned, sooty exhaust gas entering your intake. You'll still get some build-up of oil (mostly from the CCV if you still have that in place), but it won't bake on and restrict air flow.

Keith,

And everyone, I really thank you guys for this education. I have a better understanding now why everyone is disabling it, or better yet keeping it closed. Will I feel a difference or hear one. Right now if i start my TDI up, let it idle for 2 min all of the sudden turbo wine gets real loud, like it kicked in from the rear exhaust pipe. what is happening? Something with the EGR?

Yes, your increased whine after 2 minutes is caused by your egr closing, which makes your turbo spool up to provide the extra charge flow.

"Charge Flow" is the fancy term for "all the air and stuff that is being forced into the intake manifold" Charge Flow = Turbo Flow + EGR Flow. If EGR Flow decreases, Turbo Flow must increase to bring Charge Flow up to what the engine controller decides is necessary.

moondawg,

Great explaination. Egr closes what then makes turbo kick in a little more pressure. I'm going to disable my EGR, I should then hear the Turbo even after start up because EGR is shut all the time. That whine will be there at all times? /images/graemlins/eek.gif
