With all of the controversy of the 2011 Jetta, Inside Line is beginning a year-long, 20,000 mile test of a red TDI DSG w/ Nav (link). At under 2,000 miles, their reported mileage is unimpressive at 27.2 mpg, but it will be nice to read their impressions. Enjoy.

They must be drag racing it or something. I just filled up for the first time and got about 32mpg and I was enjoying the turbo a bit too much and doing LOTS of in town stop and go driving. I think you'd really have to try hard to get less than 30mpg.

Yeah that's pretty bad! Lowest I have seen on mine is around 34mpg...and I primarily do city driving.

Went on a 200 mile round trip today - we had a blast in the car - when we left it said 270 miles left and when we got back it said 185 miles left. :)

I've noticed DSG and 6sp manual do not give the same fuel economy as it was advertised back in 2010.

Wife has the dsg Golf TDI and i have the Jetta 6spd TDI, i get better fuel mileage all the time.

Lol women aren't the best drivers for fuel economy though :D

I've got the wagon, but I just ran my last tank entirely in Sport mode to break in engine. Fuelly logged it as 32.4 and the tires never touched an expressway the entire tank. About the same mileage as test car. That was my lowest recorded tank.

I wonder if the Edmunds folks let their car idle a lot or sit in a lot of gridlock?

I'm getting about 28 mpg average on a car with 100 miles on it since new. Ran the first 20 miles in "D", and am now running in Sport mode based upon the break in recommendations here. Minimal highway so far and a good amount of idle time is conspiring to keep me below 30 mpg average. Once I take it on my commute starting tomorrow, I'm confident my avg mpg will increase.

I've got DSG and don't have a problem at all!

I don't think he is saying it as a problem just that the manuals get better mileage than the DSG. This is probably negligible in city driving because I would think most manual drivers would shift later than the DSG will. On highway is a different story - the manual revs lower in 5/6th gear than the DSG does in 5/6th gear.

Note: looks like you are getting excellent mileage. :D

I don't see how they did that bad either. My first tank was 35, but my last 5 have been 40 or above. It must be "drive it like you stole it" in their test car.

Those guys typically have a tough time getting decent mileage in anything. Although they never have any issues with turbo vanes freezing up due to lack of use

42.5 mpg? What's your secret? Any additives? Where do you get your diesel?

No secret, no additives...yet anyways. I fill up at the local enmark station which has a 2-5% bio-blend diesel, the cleanest pumps in town, and is relatively new.

IF I do fill up somewhere other than the enmark, I will use the opti-lube XPD, but so far, I have not filled up anywhere but there.

To be honest, when my gf drives the car, she gets better mileage than me. If she were to drive it for a full tank without me driving it in between, I am sure we would average 46-48mpg, but since I drive it a couple days a week, and I am heavy footed compared to her, it lowers it a bit. Still better than 27 though which is ridiculous!
