Thanks for bringing this article to our attention. I would have never thought about searching for such comparison articles. Glad I made the right choice.
I remember one a while back comparing the Golf TDI, Hatchback Prius and Honda's new Hybrid (CZX?). The results were similar, with the Honda coming in last, so it was nice to see the same type of comparison for the wagons.
(The writers were accused on veedub/TDI bias though.)
I think that they serve different markets. People who buy VW tend to be looking for better handling and performance (i.e. torque), while still getting the practicality of the higher MPG. Prius drivers (generally speaking) tend to be more concerned about being "green" and probably are more apt to live in the city.
It would make an interesting poll question, one would think...
