This isn't a '98, and it isn't a TDI, but a really nice 2000 2.0L I'm changing its original timing belt on today:
Don't see a lot of these anymore, this one's a low mileage survivor.

I know where a super nice ALH 01M with less than 30k is... I need to go check in on it. If I could get it and swap it with Matt's new 6 speed swap and sell the low mile 01M I would be very happy.

There is a guy in Upper Michigan that has a 98 NB TDI. It supposedly has only 52 miles on it. Used to advertise on theSamba.

To add to the NLA list for '98 NB parts:
RR brake line
tail light sockets
upper radiator hose (the one with the sensor)
the wingnut for the tail lamps
...not all of those are '98 NB specific of course. Getting more difficult every day. And where aftermarket stuff IS available, it is all too often of very poor quality.
