EA288 Long Crank First Start

Hi,

I have an EA288 TDI 2.0 184ps which suffers with extended cranking during the first start of the day. The duration of the crank seems to vary and some days is instant, however, on other days it can take up to 8-10 seconds before it fires up. The car has never not fired up, but the crank is sometimes at a constant speed, but other times seems as if it is stuttering during start up. On some of the longer crank times, a Start Stop Error message comes up on the dashboard and the start stop system is unavailable until the ignition is cycled again. There is no EML on and the car runs fine once started. Any starts once warm or following the initial start is fine.

Below is the VCDS scan for my engine module. There appears to be errors stored for the Camshaft Position Sensor, as well as the camshaft positioner. Is the camshaft positioner referring the VVT actuator on this engine?

Has anyone seen this before or has any idea what may be the cause of this? The Camshaft Positioner or the Camshaft Position Sensor? I am surprised there is no EML?

Thanks,

I know this sound goofy but my mk6 cjaa JSW has intermittent cold start extended crank "experiences", as you described. I, pre start, pump the accelerator twice and it will never have issue. Weird as it sounds multiple peeps with mk6 confirm this.

Worth a try on the ea288?

A couple of us here have changed/upgraded our lift pumps, none have reported long cranks since doing so.

I had exactly the same issue then total failure at 21k on my mk 7 GTD
Buy the revised vvt valve ASAP there is now a VW TPI point of interest on the part.
