Hi,
Just wanted to give a bit of last minute advice for your dyno day to help it go smoother. Sorry I won't be able to make it down there this time, because I am swamped with work, and still trying to catch up from lost time during last weeks tax time crunch.
1. Designate someone to bring a white board and keep track of each participant, with a quick description of car, mods, and results. Take a photo of the white board to post later.
2. Dyno in 4th gear, and roll into it at 1500rpms, and lift at 4600 rpms, or 6000 if RC6 ;-)
3. Designate someone with vagcom to vaglog the runs, very simple, 001, 004, and 011 for rotaries, and 001, 008, and 011 for PD's. Let the operator know in advance that someone will be sitting in the passengers seat logging. Keep track of the log files by appending the users name to the file name. ie. 001_004_011_Jeff_RC6_1.csv
4. Videotape the smoke, and gages (boost & egt) always helps later
5. Obvious other things; Place fans on intercooler. Air up tires to 35psi.
6. Please assign someone's wife to make and distribute name tags.
7. Bring a clear plastic collection/donation bucket (clearly labeled) and place near the food. Collection money can be used to tip the operators, pay for food, and/or facilities. You can also bring another one as a mandatory donation for participants only, so that the top HP wins the pot! I'm sure he will need it to keep the wife happy (Ben). hehe.
Remember, you are paying for the shops dyno time, it's not entertainment, it's R&D, The runs you do today, will be used in the future for comparisons of your upgrades. Obey shop rules, have a group spokesman organize and control the event and be the liason to the shops owner. Your dyno day will become an annual event if it is successful.
Past dyno disasters:
1. People who pay in advance for 2 runs, get just that - one strap-down, and 2 runs. If you plan for some mods, and strap it back down a 2nd time, that is 2 strap downs or twice the cost. We paid $400 out of pocket at the end of a dyno event, cuz the organizer who took the money was busy at the food table all day. 12 cars were prepaid, however there were 16 strap-downs. That's what the operator kept track of we got billed for, but not what was collected. The remaining balance due came out of my pocket.
2. Make sure to get your engine covers, battery covers, and other parts you take off and set aside. If you remove timing covers, etc, place them in the trunk, not on the floor. Same with tools, put them in the trunk, don't leave them on the cowling, or core support. They can fall down in the pit, and delay things.
3. The dyno puts more load on your car than the road. If your car is shutting down due to problems, it's not wise to repeatly do this. You can jump a timing belt with the inertia reversals at high rpms. If you don't have boost & egt gages, use vagcom to log the data and make sure your boost is safe. Crank in boost valves, otherwise, your boost may be lower than specified if not properly adjusted before hand - vagcom will show this.
Have fun, and I hope to visit TX in the near future.
Jeff
