I don't think it really ends, it's just the dyno shop will stop doing dyno tests around that time. From what I can tell, there will still be a group hanging out working on cars, etc and then going for BBQ that evening.

Colvin has gotten some complaints about noise from dynos, so they probably end it around a certain time in compliance with the neighborhood behind them. Its an old neighborhood with little old houses, but because of their location, they are all $500k+, crazy!

I've been there before. They have stuff laying around everywhere. Wheels, seats, headlight, interiors, cars, etc. They are a little off the beaten path, but a neat place to visit regardless.

They installed my VNT-17 for me. Other than leaving my VAG-COM port hanging by my feet, they seemed to have done a good job. Its still going.

Hi,

Just wanted to give a bit of last minute advice for your dyno day to help it go smoother. Sorry I won't be able to make it down there this time, because I am swamped with work, and still trying to catch up from lost time during last weeks tax time crunch.

1. Designate someone to bring a white board and keep track of each participant, with a quick description of car, mods, and results. Take a photo of the white board to post later.

2. Dyno in 4th gear, and roll into it at 1500rpms, and lift at 4600 rpms, or 6000 if RC6 ;-)

3. Designate someone with vagcom to vaglog the runs, very simple, 001, 004, and 011 for rotaries, and 001, 008, and 011 for PD's. Let the operator know in advance that someone will be sitting in the passengers seat logging. Keep track of the log files by appending the users name to the file name. ie. 001_004_011_Jeff_RC6_1.csv

4. Videotape the smoke, and gages (boost & egt) always helps later

5. Obvious other things; Place fans on intercooler. Air up tires to 35psi.

6. Please assign someone's wife to make and distribute name tags.

7. Bring a clear plastic collection/donation bucket (clearly labeled) and place near the food. Collection money can be used to tip the operators, pay for food, and/or facilities. You can also bring another one as a mandatory donation for participants only, so that the top HP wins the pot! I'm sure he will need it to keep the wife happy (Ben). hehe.

Remember, you are paying for the shops dyno time, it's not entertainment, it's R&D, The runs you do today, will be used in the future for comparisons of your upgrades. Obey shop rules, have a group spokesman organize and control the event and be the liason to the shops owner. Your dyno day will become an annual event if it is successful.

Past dyno disasters:
1. People who pay in advance for 2 runs, get just that - one strap-down, and 2 runs. If you plan for some mods, and strap it back down a 2nd time, that is 2 strap downs or twice the cost. We paid $400 out of pocket at the end of a dyno event, cuz the organizer who took the money was busy at the food table all day. 12 cars were prepaid, however there were 16 strap-downs. That's what the operator kept track of we got billed for, but not what was collected. The remaining balance due came out of my pocket.

2. Make sure to get your engine covers, battery covers, and other parts you take off and set aside. If you remove timing covers, etc, place them in the trunk, not on the floor. Same with tools, put them in the trunk, don't leave them on the cowling, or core support. They can fall down in the pit, and delay things.

3. The dyno puts more load on your car than the road. If your car is shutting down due to problems, it's not wise to repeatly do this. You can jump a timing belt with the inertia reversals at high rpms. If you don't have boost & egt gages, use vagcom to log the data and make sure your boost is safe. Crank in boost valves, otherwise, your boost may be lower than specified if not properly adjusted before hand - vagcom will show this.

Have fun, and I hope to visit TX in the near future.
Jeff

Hello all,

I am new to TDIclub GTG's and am not sure what takes place there. It is my understanding that there maybe people attending the GTG that may be able to assist me with the immobilizer problem my 2001 Golf TDI is having. The immobilizer indicator light will flash in the dashboard and the car starts and immediately shuts off. The light will stop flashing after 10 minutes and the car will start then. I am wondering if it is possible to reduce the time from 10 minutes down to seconds. If not I would like to deactivate the immobilizer. Does anyone know if someone at the GTG can help with that?

Thanks,

Ciccio
Hi,

This is a continuation of the above quoted text. It sounds like I have a problem with connection of the pickup coil at the ignition. Can anyone here help me with the following?:

1. Pull the steering wheel off
2. Remove the plastic around the column, to gain access to the ignition switch
3. Check to make sure the small 2pin plug is fully inserted and the pins are still locked into the socket
4. Reseat the cluster connectors, and ecu connectors.

I live in SW Austin and would gladly pay someone with experience on the above.

Regards,
Ciccio

I am backwards from you guys, just finished Salt lick, wont do Rudy's tonite, will be at Colvins tomorrow. Is Dave bringing Vag-com? Is he designated guy? Dave?

I believe they have a 5000lb drum, so Jeff was right the drum will load better then the car down the road..Better watch your RC1+/RC2 boost shutdowns and heat...So air your tires down to about 35psi, to prevent slippage, watch that OEM clutch..

See ya there..Get Colvin to trun on their printer to get print outs..They are cool about looking around..

One lasy FYI, Dont get behind car when DYNOing...Rocks are thrown off tires at 100mph..They HURT!!!!

I'd add one item to jeff's list, previously mentioned: Make sure you dyno a stock car for comparison. Have fun, guys!

Peter: I am "in" for the dyno, but getting squimish about subjecting my 01M trans to the test. I am "stock" and in good shape except that I have experienced a few shifts lately that have been a little late completing. I guess I'll see how I feel about it in the morning:p . I alerted Ben to have a tow rope ready so that he can haul me back to Houston if there is a calamity!

Don't risk it. I doubt they'd run an auto anyway.

I'm definately leaning that way. Back when I ran a beefed up Mustang with an AOD trans, a dyno run was OK, but I guess these autos are not that strong.

Thanks,

Tony

I'm doing an Auto Trans Dyno...

I know it's probably not recommended, but I am dynoing my car a total of 4 times tomorrow (hopefully, if there is time). I'd like to dyno twice stock, so that covers our stock car baseline, then dyno twice more after I get tuned.
I don't have the infamous 4-speed 01M transmission. I have the 09A, which is the 5 speed Tip-Tronic. I will try to do my dyno runs in 4th gear, but the one problem with that is it will not let it shift into 4th until I hit 30mph. Also, if the RPM's go too high, it will automatically shift into 5th.
Since a dyno is a steady increase in RPM, rather than a quick punch to the floor, I think I should be ok, but I will definitely post the mishaps (if any) that I encounter. The only issue that I think I might encounter is the transmission either downshifting in the lower RPM's or upshifting in the higher RPM's. Other than that it should be fine IMO.
