I understand there are two plugs together under your trans the inside one is the full line, you remove this plug and put vw trans flud in until it begans to drain out then its full put plug back in, your good to go. Others on here will give you much better info.

You gotta use VCDS to set the fluid level properly in the 01m trans has to be at a certain temp to get the level correct. Find someone close with VCDS and experience with the 01m (hint hint find a trusted tdi mechanic close to you)

I had the same question when I first got my car. The 01M auto is supposed to be a lifetime transmission and doesn't have a dipstick or readily accessable fill tube. If you want to check the fluid you need to warm the fluid to a specific temp (hence the need for the Vag Com), then take out the plug to see what hapens. If alot of fluid comes out then there was too much in there, and if nothing comes out then there isn't enough. To add fluid, you need to remove a cover plate and screw in a plug when you're done filling. The Bentley guide does a much better job of explaining this than I do, but I think that that's the jist of it. Personally my trans has been working well all along, but did change the fluid and filter at 200,000 miles just to be safe. Haven't had any issues before or after, but I believe that my experiences with this trans aren't necessarily the norm...

Clutching

Before the wife's former 05 Passat TDI, her current Touareg TDI, and a Eurovan, none of which had problems with the auto trans, I've only owned two other cars that were not manuals. Guess what broke on those vehicles first? Having owned lots of cars, 13 of which have been VWs, I've never had a manual trans break on me. Hearing rumors of the eventual demise of "three pedal" cars saddens me.:(
