2013 Passat w/ DSG. Only 82k miles. My car is making the sound that says DMF replacment is needed. I don't have the time to do the work myself so will need to have a mechanic do the replacement. I'd like to get a rough idea of what it will cost for the entire job so that when I'm shopping around I know I'm not being overcharged. Any suggestions on a good replacement to go with?

Saw posts about for 6hrs R&R the flywheel and the cost for the DMF, shops usually put a markup on them.

About $1,600 to do a DMF job. That's why I DIY as labor cost is nuts.

$1600-2500, but all shops are different you call 4 of them and you'll get 4 different prices.

Don’t be surprised if you have to make multiple attempts to find someone to do it. I went in to a European car specialist garage in my city to try to get a ballpark number on this job. Surprisingly, they didn’t seem all that familiar with the failing DMF issue, had trouble understanding that it was a DSG trans, not a manual, and basically weren’t interested in the work.

I've called a few shops over the last few days and have found one and have the work scheduled for next week. I've used this shop about 10 years ago when I replaced my cam on my BEW. All of the shops were telling me a two day job except for the one I'm going to use. He said his mechanic can do it in a day and has done a couple in the last month. He had the invoice from the last one they replaced right in front of him when I called. $1700 for the job.

There are just too many to list....
I could R&R the FWD 02E blindfolded. Between all the rattling DMFs and the EA888 rear main seals blown apart... doing yet another one of those seals today!

Love it when the EA888s are bolted to DSGs.... by far the easiest transmissions to R&R, much easier than the Aisins, and I'd say even easier than the manuals.

Paid 500$ cad for the labor, paid 550$ cad for the flywheel from rockauto. 1050$ cad or 763$ USD total

What if you toss a belvel box and prop shaft in the mix? same cost and headache level? lol.

Hardly changes anything, really. Just the three bolts on the joint to the prop shaft. It comes out pretty much the same... if it is the Aisin box, the torque converter nut access is a bit tight, and you for sure have to be extra careful not to drop one. On those I also leave the CV axles attached (it's a little awkward, but they are a pain to remove). DSGs are cake. FWD or AWD.

The longitudinal cars are a bit more work, and almost all of those are AWD although the rear prop shaft isn't really much of anything extra.

Update: got the dual mass flywheel replaced. Turned into a two day project as after they got ready for the new flywheel they discovered the new one looked like it had been dropped and was unusable. Got it back the next day after a replacement was delivered. I had them do the DSG service while they were at it. The rattle is gone. Cost a little over $2000. Sidenote: I asked the tech/owner if he had ever done any deletes. He said that would be illegal for him to do that but it is something that makes these cars more reliable. Guess that's the sign of an honest mechanic.

I know. In my younger day I would do it myself. I can almost lose more money by not working while I'm wrenching so it's worth it to pay to have it done. I'm also a year out from major back surgery and wrestling w/ a 300 lb DSG didn't seem like something I wanted to do.

He said it was illegal, but did he say it'd get it done for you? ;)

my local guy who does our yearly state inspections drives a deleted duramax with illegal window tints.

The shop has no issues with our 50% front tints on our windows, (NH law is absolutely no tint on the fronts) just says if we get pulled over and they ask, tell them we just tinted it.

There's another diesel shop that I take my Ford to not too far away. He got caught doing deletes and ended up paying a $20k settlement to the government. Don't think he wants to take the chance.

Yes, mine went away when I put it in gear. Mine must not have been that bad yet because the only time I could hear it was after cold startup while in park. Sometimes after warmed up and in park and sometimes not.

That was the case with mine also. It started out sounding like a BB being shaken in a coffee can, then got to be more like a marble in a gallon paint can.
