Hello! I have a 2010 with a DSG. 274k miles and it needs to have the flywheel replaced. I’m debating on wether or not replacing the transmission too because of some other possible issues. I called around to look for a used one and they all asked what the transmission code was. How do I find that and does it even matter? Thanks!

Yes, it does matter. It has to be for a diesel.
Look for a tag under the mat where the spare tire is.
It will have a list of equipment codes. The three letter engine code will be CJA and the trans will be one of these:
(bold letters)
AT, 2.0L, diesel, transmission ID KQC
AT, 2.0L, diesel, transmission ID LQV
AT, 2.0L, diesel, transmission ID MFL
AT, 2.0L, diesel, transmission ID LTE

The dealer parts guy can also get it from the VIN.

DSGs rarely fail, I'd be curious as to why you think you need to replace it.
Okay. So a few reasons why I think the trans or could possibly be a mech unit but a mech unit would be just as much as a used trans. Reasons: when I’m coming to a stop sometimes it will shutter when it comes to a stop or won’t “disengage” and I have to shift into neutral. The car is really bad about downshifting say I’m going around a windy road and it’s like when you’re driving a manual and just don’t want to downshift and leave it in a high gear but then once you press the gas pedal down far enough it will often aggressively shift down 2 gears. (It’s almost like an inexperienced manual car driver is driving) You can also hear the mech unit (I assume) when downshifting, it’s been doing that awhile but it getting louder. Idk if there’s anything I can do about the trans shifting issues. I know there was a recall about replacing the mech unit but my car was “outside the VINs” even though it was experiencing all the issues listed in the recall

Well I'd rather put a new M-unit in that a used transmission. But I would start by seeing if you can run all the Basic Settings and see if it behaves better for you.

It needs a flywheel too so I have to put that in and isn’t a new m unit a dealer install only?
How do you run all the basic settings?

I'm not a dealer, and I've put plenty of M-units in. Basic Settings is done with any VAG-suitable scan tool such as VCDS. M-unit replacement is REALLY easy once the whole gearbox is out. That's a cake job, 02Es are a nice easy R&R on the A5s.

Ohhh okay. I noticed the shifting issue seemed to get worse after I had the “diseelgate” fix done. Before I was having other issues with it as I’m going down a hill and when it would shift, it would aggressively bang into the next gear but after the dieselgate fix that issue went away and on came the “inexperienced driver” shifting type stuff. So removing the trans isn’t that big of a deal? Do I need ti remove the crossmember?

I always drop the subframe down, steering gear, control arms, sway bar, and all. Electric steering racks are great for serviceability... just a couple wires... no mess. Easy peasy.

Okay. I do have access to ERWIN and a VW OE scan tool so I will try the basic settings thing tomorrow hopefully

Not sure how the current OE scan tool does it, but VCDS info can be found on ross-tech's info page of all the Basic Settings you have to go through and in what order... you can skip the one for the paddle shifters, your car doesn't have that.

Okay. Could the shifting maybe have to do with the throttle position? How do you reset the throttle position or adaption if that makes sense

NAHRSARER,
Your description sounds familiar and perhaps it's just the DSG computer making its gear choices rather than I would if it were driving a MT.
My 02E actually makes some odd gear choices too and in parking lots on a hill, I have even killed the engine.
But I have a record of every DSG done on or before the required interval so I'm not going to worry about it.
