My 2010 JSW DSG transmission makes a whirring noise then bangs hard when its clutches engage. It can do this in all gears, but most noticeable in first and second. I just changed the fluid and filter, which were very dirty, but it still does it. I bought the car non-running, so I don’t know any history on it, except I’m pretty sure it had been sitting for at least 2 years. No transmission codes in vagcom. How can I figure this out? Do I need to replace the clutches? TIA for any advice.

Off the top of my head, that sounds like a mech unit. Strange there's no codes

So this was happening prior to you getting it and figured a fluid flush and filter couldn't hurt and it kept doing it even after?

Silly question, how much fluid did you take out & put in?

There are just too many to list....
Run through all the M-unit adaptations, drive it for a while, redo the adaptations and maybe change the fluid again (you can probably leave the new filter alone). It may clear itself up... sitting probably didn't help it. A new M-unit may not fix it, really tough to say at this point. A whirring noise is never a good thing.

I bought the car non-running, and just completed an engine swap to get it going (guess I shoulda swapped the transmission too). When I first got it running, it wasn’t as glitchy, but it got worse as I drove it. Oilhammer said sometimes a fluid change fixes this issue, so I tried it. About a gallon came out, I put in 5 quarts, then warmed it up and pulled the lower plug to let it reach the correct level. Also, did the vagcom adaptations that were YouTube recommended. Any way to check the clutches for wear? I bought the car for my wife, and the low-miles engine runs great, so I really have to fix it now. In your opinion, Would it be better to replace the clutches and M-unit, or just try to find a good used transmission?

Thanks, quick question on compatibility. Car-parts.com shows 4 codes for a 2010 diesel automatic transmission:
LTE, KQC, LQV, MFL. Can I get this code from the VIN?
Also, I found a fairly low miles KQC one pretty cheap that says it need a pan and has bent pins on plug. Could I likely swap pan and plug from old transmission? It’s in Dallas area, pretty close, may look at it today.

The dealer can give you the original as built code by VIN, you can also find the code on the build tag stuck to the trunk floor, near the spare tire well, or on the transmission case itself under the mount bracket.

Thanks oilhammer.
Just my luck, looks I have an LTE code, from a 2010 only Jetta TDI, or 2008 to 2013 Audi A3 TDI. Certainly narrows down the options.

Anybody have a good LTE DSG they want to sell? I’ll come to pick it up most anywhere.

Yes, I already called a few yards from car-parts.com. All of them closed until Monday.

Well, I think it’s officially time for a new transmission. This story definitely falls into the “you can’t make this stuff up” category. We were about to head to Arkansas for the 4th, daughter said car was driving weird, acted like it wanted to stall. I decided to take it for a quick drive to see what was happening, and got about 8 block from my house. I tried to turn around to head back, but the engine stalled as the DSG clutch released. Tried it again, same thing. Tried it in reverse, same thing. Then finally realized that this car wasn’t going anywhere under its own power. Then I figured out I that I had both sets of keys for our only other working vehicle, so no one could even rescue me. So I turned on the hazards, left the car at the stop sign, and started walking. I had my daughter leave grandson at home to accompany me, and immediately left in the GSW to tow it home. About then, the police called, asking why I’d abandoned my car at a busy intersection. They were waiting for me at the car, and were really cool about it once I showed up with a tow rope. Apparently, it was a really quiet 4th, and I had livened things up A bit for them. Daughter was awesome towing me, (she grew up in my house, so it wasn’t her first or even fifth time to drag me home), but she reminded me that I had told her about 15 minutes prior that the car she was now towing was perfectly fine for us to take to Arkansas with our 18 month old grandson. Oilhammer had recommended finding a good used transmission rather than trying to to fix mine, but I’m a slow learner, so I was still hoping it would fix itself. I guess that ship has finally sailed.
so, Anyone know if I can use other transmission codes? I have a trans code LTE, and car-part.com only gives me LTE hits when I search. Is there an interchange for it, or do I just need to match it up exactly?
