hi guys I've been reading up about DSG fluid change and i'm going to do the 'top fill' method... but I got 2 questions

i'll be getting a 14mm allen with 1/2" drive at the back

1. but with the 8mm allen u need to remove the plastic snorkel. will I need an 'socket bit' or will the regular 'L' shaped allen key give enough torque to remove the snorkel? because the 8mm allen bit I found is very short Im not sure if it will be long enough to reach the hex snorkel...

2. when using top fill method from the oil filter housing, what is the maximum Outer diameter for the plastic hose I can fit into that little hole? I've sold my old car so now if the hose I have is too big I can't just go buy one. I need to buy the correct size hose and a funnel first.

thanks

I think you would be fine with just the 'L' shaped Allen key. I personally have never come across one where I needed some torque to take it out. I've just always used a socket bit on the end of an extension by hand.

cheer thanks, seems like the plastic snorkel is very lightly screwed in,,, do u know what size OD hose I can fit into the filter housing hole? it seems very small but on the 'guides' here and youtube, they were able to fit a HUGE funnel onto a tiny hose lol.

also im trying to do it without VCDS, from what I see in some videos. there is one guy drain the fluid when trans still warm... after he put new fluid in its already at 45'c ..... im thinking about to put slightly more fluid than the fluid that drain out... say 4.8 Liters, and then just run engine and shift between the gears for 2 minutes and then drain out the extra, that should get the fluid to the acceptable temp? outside temp is about 20'c.... u reckon will be ok?

a short 8mm socket should work just fine.

you may find it easier to use this on either a straight extension, or screwdriver handle to install the snorkel. a long L shaped one should be fine as well.

the thermometer is a good idea, use it near the fill/drain port. I verified this location is within a degree c of the internal fluid temp. So I would run through the gears, and as soon as it reads 35C, pull the drain plug, let drain till the flow slows to spurts, put the plug back, and turn off the car. you do want to level the car if you are going to the effort of properly setting the level. eyeball is close enough.

Hopkins 1074 funnel has hose fitting that fits perfectly into the DSG filter housing for top fill, I think Walmart sells one forget the brand.

I DONE IT GUYS!!! using infrared thermometer! but engine was still warm when I filled it temp is almost spot on after I run it for 2 minutes shifting gears.... drain out the extras until it slow drip... BTW... I drain out 6 liters of oil... the previous owner must have overfilled the tranny....

after all that was the MOST BORING and LONG oil change I've EVER done in my life.... LUCKY I had BEEER.... (almost poor beer into the gearbox) o_O
