DSG Failure Causes

I've been reading up on many of the different DSG failures on the forums and it seems to end up as a small set of parts that need to be replaced (ordered by apparent popularity):

  1. Mechatronics Unit
  2. Clutches
  3. Sensors (after collecting too many metal shavings from the diff)
What's usually the part in the mech unit that fails? The solenoids? Are they collecting too much junk from the clutches?

Is there much that can be done besides regular maintenance to keep the unit going indefinitely? Any useful upgrades?
(Not counting the DMF as it seems like it's regular unscheduled maintenance)

I own a 2015 Golf TDI w/ DSG and am interested in keeping it (DSG too!) past 500k km.

I think some of the tuners write a tune for the DSG's that may help with longevity.

I can't address your question directly, but fwiw I don't think the later model DSGs are inherently (or particularly) unreliable. For every post I read about a DSG problem I read at least 20 or more posts about how iffy DSGs are - claims always posted by MT owners/fanbois.

I know anecdotal accounts don't mean much, but mine's been flawless for 77K miles. Just get it serviced every 40K and you should be fine.
