Drivetrain Maintenance: Miles or Months?

I was just shocked with a $900 quote by the dealer for the 48 mo. service on our 2010 JSW TDi. We only have 25k miles on the car, so we're caught between the listed time and the mileage for maintenance. I'm wondering just how critical the fuel filter and trans service are with this low mileage. Should I get the engine oil & filter changed, and spread the rest out over the the next 6-12 months? Would VW really stiff me on the drivetrain warranty if something comes up in the final year and I had deferred that maintenance; e.g., transmission appeared, even if we're still far under the specific mileage for maintenance?

Warranty is not maintenance relative. Doesn't factor in. Its time/miles. Period. Now the dsg service I'd say is 40,000 miles. Unless it took you like 5 years to do . Even then personally for me it would still be . Engine oil might be another story.

Can you find a shop that can do the DSG work ? Make sure they know how to do it properly. At least get a quote. As DRbillZ said, warranty isn't affected if maintenance is done by a good indy shop.

I just had this done by my local mechanic (not VW). DSG service, replace alternator pulley, fix steering column clock spring, fix air bag connection problem, fix windshield washer (patch cracked line) , replace both CV boots: $800. So figure from there. That was our A5 Jetta

I should add that I live in the boonies and there aren't any VW indies in the area.
