Get my new tires put on the other day and shop tells me I have a bad driver's side CV axle. I got a chance to look at it today and I see the grease is coming out of the front of the boot but I see no tear? What gives? I'm fairly new to CV axles so any help would be appreciated.

Are those basically hose clamps?

They are like hose clamps but different, but a hose clamp wouldn't be balanced, don't put a hose clamp on a drive shaft

I have a 2004 Jetta with a rip in the drivers side axle at the outer boot. On mine, the boot tore where it is tapered down & fits around the shaft just before the clamp. It doesn't look like much grease has leaked out so I have been procrastinating about changing it.

Change it because dirt and crap is getting in there and causing wear. Once the stuff hits the grease it's not going away. Instead of just possibly needing a replacement boot and grease you will be looking at a new joint.

Well I have a couple observations.

1) Large zip tie will not work
2) 3.5" hose clamp WILL work...seals it tight and no more grease is leaking out!

Buy two hose clamps and place them with screw mechanism 180 degrees to each other...thereby neutrally balanced. Newton will be proud of ya...
Wish I'd thought of this earlier...jeez...

Only problem with that is there is nowhere to put the second hold clamp. The screw part of the hose clamp already hits the side of the boot. Hmmm i'll have to get under there and look again there might be room to the inside of the hose clamp I have on there now.....can't remember.

The amount if imbalance that a hose clamp will add to your CV shaft will be similar to when you pick up a piece of gravel in the tread of your tire...

If that's the case I'm not even messing with it.

you buy 2 smaller hose clamps and hook them together. tighten evenly on the 2 sides. but don't think one hose clamp that close to the center of the spin will be out of balance enough to cause vibration. Well maybe on the autobahn....
