DPF Regen Frequency P2459

Hi all. So 2013 Passat 2.0 TDI CKRA been having CEL come on for this code. I will post a scan but the soot is 24.9 g as per VCDS. When I scan it with my AUTEL scanner, the soot comes out to 00.5 g. Not sure what's up with that.

The CEL would come on after only 7-10 miles. When I do a Force Regen the CEL won't come on for about 100 miles.

I know this could be a variety of things triggering the CEL. But is there a guide/check list on trouble shooting with VCDS to try and pin point as much as possible. I am experiencing a whining noise coming from the turbo. Being that these are attached to each other not sure if the turbo not operating normally could trigger the DPF code. I don't have turbo trouble codes at all and besides the CEL coming on, car runs fine.

I performed a couple of tests on basic settings with VCDS:

NOx sensor-aborted-safety reasons/malfunction.

Test of oxygen sensor-Finished correctly/End of system test: system not OK.

Test of charger air pressure control-Finished correctly/End of system test: system not OK.

Not sure what to make of these or if related. Any ideas, comments, suggestions appreciated.

There has been quite a bit of discussion of this code and excessive regeneration of the DPF. Do some searching. One thing to consider is the lines to the pressure sensors that trigger regen can get blocked with carbon, or the sensor itself can go bad. I have had both of those situations. I eventually installed a Kerma tune about 3 years ago and have not had any issues since then, regens at about 430-450 miles every single time.

I did a live output of soot calculated and soot measured as I was driving to work. I noticed the soot levels elevate as I step on gas. Then the numbers start dropping as i let go of the gas. This is probably normal operation but i had never logged those. The trip was about 10 miles and soot levels reached steady from 1.96g (had just done a manual regen) and climbed to about 27g going about 70 mph on freeway. When I slowed down getting off ramp and on street traffic, the levels steadily decreased. At the time I parked car numbers were at about 5.47g measured and 5.84g calculated. Does this mean anything ?

What is the odometer reading? Keep in mind, the dpf can plug up with ash which continuously accumulates over the the life of the dpf. It is only soot that is managed with regens. On my 2012 ckra, the ash cleaning service interval is about 120,000 (mi or km?)

It appears that your aftertreatment sys is able to manage the soot load so that makes me wonder if the car is driven long enough to give the sys time to do its thing. What is the average mileage of your daily commute? Diesels with aftertreatment are not well suited for short drives.

The G550 dpf differential psi sensor value over a range of engine loads, as well as the exhaust gas temp values 1,2,3 and 4 during your regen would be helpful in evaluating health of aftertreatment control sys.

Whining noise from turbo is concerning. That could be a boost leak or it could be the turbine wheel rubbing the turbine housing due to a failed turbo which is VERY common on these passats. If you have a failed turbo, is it sending oil into the exhaust, causing your dpf to plug up? Inspection of turbine wheel can be done by using bore scope through lambda sensor port in top of the doc/dpf.

My 2015 has been dropping the regen milage down to 30 km over probably a year. I purchased a used DPF had it cleaned for 150 CAD and then swapped them out and now my regens are close to 300 km

Thank you! Now, this is helpful feedback. Odometer is just over around 142,000 miles as of last scan taken about three days ago. So, to clean the ash, is like doing it manually, like taking the dpf off and having it baked? I will log those parameters . Soon as i get a chance, will take look at that turbo with scope. BUt yes, I have considered possibility of oil getting into exhaust via the turbo; how , I dont know. I have to study the schematics how those are connected. I am getting no turbo fault codes, though. No smoke, no soothy tailpipes.

While had the oxygen sensor out checking the exhaust side of turbo for oil leaks-it was dry, no signs of oil leak. I wiped the soot off sensor and put it back. Sealed a small vacuum leak I found. I reset, relearned all options having to do with DPF, exhaust, etc.. in the basic settings. Over 80 miles now driving and no check engine light. However, when I scan car, it has the 2459 code stored there already just no CEL . Usually it would only take about 7-10 miles and light would come on. Don't know if something I did fixed it. Will see will keep driving. The whining sound does not go away though.

Well, have since taken it to mechanic. His diagnosis was not helpful; he said maybe needs new differential pressure sensor and/or the DPF is plugged. I thought he would provide a more concrete diagnosis. I have been monitoring the differential pressure sensor and soot . When driving, sensor fluctuates between 60-450 hPA's. Kind of erratic too, say it may be at 220 hpa and suddenyly spikes to 290 or higher, then drops, all while gas pedal is steady. Soot doesn't really move from 16g. There is no smke from tail pipes, no soothy tail pipes, no DPF light. I guess I will install new sensor and see what result.
