With my car enduring it's first brutal winter in ND, it seems to not want to operate at 190* anymore. Today, right at freezing, I couldn't get it above 180, even driving in 5th gear at 65mph. So I am concerned that my T-stat isn't doing it's job to allow the condition to be right for a regen. I even have the largest piece of cardboard covering the radiator I could stuff in there.
For most of winter, my car wouldn't come up to operating temps. Even when it was in the 50s and 60s, it might show at operating temps but it would not stay there. I also had the gauge show the coolant at operating temps, but VCDS showed it at 76*C or 168*F, not 190.

It's a bit low, but i would not worry about it if the gauge still shows 190.
My mk7 tdi will do a regen even with a cold engine, it will start like after 5 minutes of runtime. Not sure if the same behavior is expected on the mk6.

You did not answer my answer about proper DPF reset after replacement. Call your dealer and see if they have any clue about having done that.

During the winter, the coolant was RARELY at operating temp according to the gauge. My research indicated that the engine needed to be at operating temp as a prerequisite for a regen.

I have no idea if they performed a proper DPF reset. I do know that it's been 30k miles since replacement. Shouldn't I have had an issue prior to this?

Work order says "Replace DPF assembly and EGR filter and rescan DTC no stored at this time"

My understanding is that the ECU needs to know the current ash level. if the ash level was not reset (DPF reset), then I can see the ECU letting your DPF go near full IF the previous DPF was full of ash. if you have VCDS you can check the ash value. with only 30k it should be low, if you see a high number, then the DPF was not reset and maybe that's [part of] your problem.

What levels should I be looking for? I recall looking at it recently, but I didn't know what normal levels were.

On my mk7, 98% highway driving, I'm filling up the DPF to the rate of 3g of ash per 10000 miles. City driving, and those who love idling, shall expect significantly more.

Once I get it back running, I will check the ash level and report back. I am going to be sick if I changed the t-stat for nothing. However, the fact is, it should have been warming up better than it was.

I'll say a prayer that you can get it all back running, jesus_man.

Thanks for the support (and especially the prayers). I know that first weekend I wrenched on it, I was just in a bad funk! I got it back running Friday night and had flushed the coolant system once. Finished the job Saturday afternoon. I was low on coolant and it was a little weak, so I added straight G12 and I need to take it for another spin to mix it all up. I don't think my shop-vac is strong enough to complete this method, but it did help a lot. Also, the cheap vac tube crushed too with the hot coolant, so I will need to replace that.

The engine does seem to come up to temp and stay there, but I haven't driven it anywhere for a real test.

My biggest fights were:
1. Just the lack of space in there. Consider pulling the front end if you attempt this or pack several extra helpings of patience. It can be done without, but being able to have everything right in front of you would make it 10 times easier.
2. I don't recall ever seeing anyone with the bracket that bolts to the side of the block and supports the Throttle Body on the two lower fasteners. This was the cause of my breaking the dip stick tube. Once I removed it, the new tube dropped right in. This gave me a little more room to work in there too. I had removed it once, but put back in there too soon I guess.

I felt good too that once I was done, there were no leftover fasteners!! I use a divided organizer similar to a fishing tackle box to keep the fasteners organized. Each group of fasteners gets it's own bin. Otherwise, I am pretty sure I would forget what went where.

The real test will be a few good commutes and see if I can get the MIL to go away.

While I was waiting for it to warm up, I fired up VCDS.

Oil Ash Volume 18ml
Soot Load Calculated = 12.9g
Mileage since last regen was (shocker!) 220km. So it had ran somewhere in there.

The code still present is P2BA6

I had P2BA6 and P1A58 and it was cleared under emission warranty. Service paper said that the NOx Catalyst was the issue and needed replacing.

I have just dealt with the MIL for the last few months as life has just been non-stop. But I had a little time today. Here are my codes again:

So what to do from here? Car has been running great. Getting high 30's for MPG's. But that MIL bugs me.

I see you have a slushbox.... go back on another 30min freeway run and manually shift into a lower gear so that your rpm is above 2k for the whole trip... hold 2.5k even and be patient.... wait until the CEL clears.... it will take about 30 min for the heat to do its job....... alternatively, you could use VCDS to trigger and standing service regen to see if that helps, but I'd leave that option until you've exhausted all others.

OK... I just looked things up to refresh my recollection.....
The regen can take as long as 50min of constant 80-120kph driving.
You can go to Engine\Long Adaptation and either select NOx Regen from the drop down or go to channel 18 and set the value to 1 in order to trigger the regen...... after that, go drive on freeway until the light goes off (so let's say 1hr to be safe)..... do it during off peak hours so that you don't run into traffic or congestion as if you drop below that required speed or shut the engine off, the regen gets cancelled.

Are you out of TDI fix warranty?
Yes. I'll see of I can carve out an excuse to go for a bit of a drive and keep it above 2.5k.

Thanks for the help!

It means it has reached a preset amount of failed regens. If you know that it's due to driving habits the system is working properly as it should.
Take it on a drive if the scanner you have can't do a forced standing regen. In the drive you need to go around 2000rpm if the vehicle is upto temp it can be done as little as about 3 miles but may take longer if vehicle feels like it. Make sure you have more than 1/4 tank fuel and pick a road which will allow you a undisturbed drive but no need to overdo do it either (it's OK to slow down if you need to)

Use only low saps oil for exhaust system longevity
That means nothing, my car is all highway miles, no short trips and I still get this code. I believe you will get this no matter what and how you use the car as for most people it will mean a dealer visit and guaranteed revenue stream for said dealer.

Wrong.... they system only "fails" when a part of it is broken.
A properly functioning system doesn't throw this code during the use pattern you describe.

I've been having a similar issue. I'm getting a few error codes:
011174 - NOx Emissions Exceeded P2BA6 - 000 - SCR Catalyst Malfunction - MIL ON
006744 - NOx Catalyst P1A58 - 000 - Regeneration Required
006481 - Radiator Fan 2 (V177) P1951 - 000 - Movement Restricted / Jammed

So the problem first began within a few months of purchasing this 2014 Jetta in Feb 2022. The DPF light came on during one of many trips between San Diego and Phoenix. I had no idea what it was at the time, so pulled over to do some research. I wasn't able to clear it that trip, but watched many YT vids and talked to a mechanic at a Phoenix VW dealership and eventually managed to take care of it. That happened a few more times over the next months, but when the Jetta hit about 122,000 miles, just past the 120k warranty limit, the DPF light just stayed on, or went out but came back on. Then the engine light came on too. I was unable to address the situation the same way I had before, just driving in sport mode keeping rpms around 2000-2500.

Back in San Diego, I asked around for someone to pull codes and was able to borrow a VAG-COM cable. The scan showed pretty much the same results I get today (below). The standing regen was unsuccessful. All attempts at a driving forced regen have also been unsuccessful. I thought I had it lat one point last week and then had to return the borrowed cable.

I got the Ross-Tech cable yesterday and tried the forced regen while driving again last night. After over an hour, both dash lights went out and they stayed out longer than an hour for the entire return trip. I was so relieved and proud of myself. However, both the DPF and engine lights came back on when I started the car up again this morning and I am just disappointed and frustrated all over again.

As I was attempting the regen last night, my soot level increased from something like 6 to just over 15 over the entire 2.5 hour drive. They never decreased and I had read that you know when the regen is finished when that soot number gets close to 0. Is that right? (How DO you know when regen is complete???) I read somewhere else that the regen cannot run unless soot levels are over 40, and mine has never come close to that so I'm confused about that.

I was talking to someone at a nearby VW dealership about it yesterday and they again made it sound like it shouldn't be difficult. They told me it would be $380 plus labor, probably 2 hours, more than it was in Phoenix. I bought the cable and converter for about $250 total including 2-day delivery and felt confident that I could do it myself so I tried. So when the lights were on again this morning, I brought her in hoping to just talk with someone and get some guidance but they weren't willing to entertain me. They wouldn't even let me talk to a service manager.

A scheduler said I could leave my car and they'd probably get to it by Tuesday or Wednesday but I'm supposed to be back in Phoenix ar
ound that time and in CO the following week. Besides, that's just to check it out and who knows how long it would take from there. The scheduler seemed to know about DPF issues and said it should be fine for the trip. He told me to just be sure I fill it up with biodiesel as lower quality diesel might be the problem. I'm like how could that be when I fill up at different places between San Diego and Phoenix all the time? I asked how to identify biodiesel and they sent me to 7-11, which has the same damn diesel #2 every other station with diesel has, but for $6.66 a gallon v. the $6.09 at the cheaper gas station in the area.

The scan I ran this morning looks pretty much like the scans from last week. Please help me figure out what I'm missing! Is there something else I need to address first? Here is today's scan:

It's hit again...seems to be EVERY winter now and this time, quite early. And worse yet, the first time it's cut power!

I think I'm done with it all. Researching what it takes to gut this thing! Any leads would be appreciated!

Here is today's scan:

hello are you able to fix this issue? I purchase my second TDI unfortunately with a tone of issues, I replace timing belt water pump alternator turbo charger, when I replace my turbo DPF filter was cleaned, it runs fine, except this code 011174 - NOx Emissions Exceeded P2BA6 - 000 - SCR Catalyst Malfunction - MIL ON, and this too, 006744 - NOx Catalyst P1A58 - 000 - Regeneration Required, what I found on the fan it was stuck with one of the AC lines check that, you can just shifted with a bar to the side.

@KKilo Seems there are some settings within the computer that need reset when you replace the DPF?? Did you do that?

No I didn't, my dpf was full of oil from a damage turbo, I replaced and cleaned and put it back on, I only drive it 40 miles after I replaced.

Yes, I still get the DPF light occasionally. I am trying to drive in sport mode most of the time and limit my idling.

Just wanted to add my experience with the P1A58 (2011 Audi A3 TDI). After a couple times of being at the dealership for the P1A58 (which I too can't shake forcing a regen with the VCDS)... the last time the dealer had it (back in Jan 2023)... they finally decided they needed to replace the NOx converter (under warranty). I also had them replace the thermostat (out of pocket) since I noticed it was barely allowing the car to reach 87 degrees C. The TDS called this out, but for some reason Audi seemed to have missed it. But based on the TDS, a bad thermostat (ie an engine not hot enough) can create issue for NOx regen.

Anyway... new NOx, new thermostat... 6,000 miles later... P1A58 is back. It seems like this is can be a chronic issue... even after a new NOx.

Would like to know if any of you have finally been able to get it fixed and have it last years thereafter without returning?

I have 3000 miles left on my emissions warranty... and if the prognosis is that I will always be dealing with this... I'll probably just have to sell the car after this last fix. I'd hate to do that. I love the car. If I can hang on to it for another 5 years/100K miles, I'd love to keep it. But all this DPF this and DPF that... makes me think these cars have a finite shelf life regardless of how well you take care of it... and a new DPF and/or NOx would basically "total" the car.

Thought?

Driving around in Sport Mode or manual mode a couple times a week, giving the car ample time to warm up first, seemed to help stave off the DPF light. Is that an acceptable solution - I don't really think so. You shouldn't have to drive the car differently to make the regen happen.
Lacking true technical knowledge I surmise that the "tuning fix" VW had to perform is just overwhelming the exhaust scrubbing system which likely wasn't designed for this load. So I fear if left stock, you will always be fighting this issue.

I feel like if you were to weld in a bung upstream of the DPF and be able to spray in some cleaner on occasion, you might be able to keep things cleaned out, but I don't really know how they go about cleaning the DPF while it's in the car.

The other solution many have chosen is to remove that equipment and tune it out of the computer, but I see you are in CO and it's hit or miss if you have emissions regulations where you live or not.

OK... so based on your response... it seems that a DPF Delete is not an option if you live in a place that requires emissions testing, which I do. Seems to be every two years that my registration renewal will require emissions testing.

I can only assume that your TDI would not pass the test, but I could be wrong. Being a CO native, and living in "The Springs" for a spell, I had to have my F-350 tested every two years. It was old enough not to have a DPF, but I will say that I mistakenly left it on a high horsepower tune once and it still passed. I just don't recall what they were measuring for. I feel like it was just an opacity, which means, no rolling coal. But the newer stuff might have to be below certain levels of NOx?? Might be worth looking into. And I think I'd call the dealer and ask them what the long term solution is.

Update: My car is still at Audi. Latest from Audi is:
They have failed to resolve the P1A58 code with 2 regen attempts. Audi HQ advised them to do it a 3rd time in which it has failed again. I'm told the issue has been "escalated at Audi HQ" as to what the tech should do at this point.

[Recall that they had just replaced the NOx converter 6000 miles ago].

After doing a bunch more research on my own, I have to admit my driving habits likely contributed to this. I've always "babied" my cars - not driving them hard, always looking to extend fuel economy etc; I always let my cars warm up... and because "it seemed like these TDIs took longer to warm up compared to my gas cars" I actually would let it sit idle warming up anywhere from 10-15 min every morning.

I've read since then that both of these habits contribute to soot build-up.

A local diesel shop confirms this. He said it doesn't matter which make, Chevy, Ford, Dodge, VW/Audi... all diesel with emissions controls like these are susceptible to this issue. "They see it all the time" especially with people who buy big diesel trucks "for show only" and never put any real load on it, like towing.
