I live in the Boston area and need a really good VW diesel mechanic preferably on the North Shore. I brought my car to the dealer and they attempted a forced regen which didn't do anything. Then I brought it to a mechanic who is pressure cleaning the filter without removing it. I have to drive about 100 miles and then bring it back to him so he can put more cleaner in and repeat. My inspection is way past due. I've already gotten a ticket! I need a really good mechanic who can troubleshoot the problem. I've researched this enough to know that it could be other things, like the thermostat, etc. I need someone who can actually figure out why the light is on. I filed a complaint with VW NA and they haven't done squat. It's out of warranty. Thanks!

What is the code that’s popping up? If it’s P2002 you most likely need a DPF. Check your tailpipes for soot also.

I posted a link to a dealership that had the cheapest DPF. You will need other parts to complete the repair.

I am not a mechanic and a woman. How expensive is it to replace the filter part/labor or is it worth it to try cleaning it? Once cleaned, is it likely to fail again? Better to just replace it?

I've had several mechanics do a scan and I believe that that code did come up once. Is it odd that the dealer and another mechanic never gave me a printout of the scans? I'm asking them for them. Here is what I think. I think two of them just tried to do a software regen while the third hopefully put cleaner in. How would I know?

First thing you need to do is call the dealership near you. Give them your vin so they can see if you have any warranty left from the diesel gate.

I did. None.
Well first look for an independent shop that works on VW. Ask them how much it would be to replace your DPF. Also ask if it’s ok if you bought the parts if they’re willing to install them. Some shops will do this but some won’t because they mark up the parts. Look to spend 2-3k on getting it fixed. I spent 2,200 on mine.

One thing at least you got 134k on your DPF. My Jetta only had 68k before it broke. Only 2 months after my warranty ended.

When I contacted the dealer they also told me there was no warranty. but I myself know where I can check and, as it turns out, there is a little more.

first thing if you stick your finger in the tail pipe and rub it and if it come out its the finger of death DPF is cracked end of story . You can just call VW customer support line give them your vin and mileage and ask what is still covered .On my site there is a link to look it up your self. For shops there are 5 of us on the TDI top shops list here. feel free to call on me WWW.DRVOLKS.com

Hello ! I understand that there will be soot in the pipe if there is a crack. But why is the finger clean in the tube in the EGR filter? and how to diagnose a crack using computer diagnostics? After all, when there is a crack, the back pressure should decrease.

Regardless, If you have that code like said before, you need a DPF. Sometimes if its early enough, you may not get that much soot or anything on the tail pipes just yet.

Hi gmann49ers ! The LOW PRESSURE EGR is after DPF ! Therefore, there should be no soot in the place where the gas is discharged. In my car this place is just clean!))) I plan to remove the filter tomorrow)))

Well I was just guessing since I said I wasn’t a mechanic. Just because your EGR is clean that doesn’t mean your DPF isn't cracked. I didn’t get EGR codes till later. My first codes (P2002) were for the DPF.

Hi all! I removed the filter, it can be removed without any problems without unscrewing the subframe. I washed it and installed it. Let's look at the result.
CNGVW and gmann49ers , do you think that replacing the DPF will fix 0401 and 2002? It's alarming that there are stories on the forums when the dealer changes it and the problem remains...

Yes and you also should replace the low pressure EGR filter even if it looks clean. Did you replace the gaskets after reinstalling the DPF? I ask because you could have an exhaust leak if you didn’t. You will know if you do because it will smell in your car.

Yes, I replaced the gaskets. I recently removed the cooler EGR and completely cleaned all the components. I don't see any point in changing it

I'll be very surprised if the code doesnt show again. Once that P2002 code shows, its a for sure thing youll need a DPF.

Today the mileage is 500 miles. Average fuel consumption decreased by approximately 8-10%. Very small traces of soot on the rear of the car. All monitors are ready to pass through smog, I started adding Lucas Oil dpf cleaner

If there is soot on the rear of the car, its the DPF thats failed. There should be NO soot on the rear if the DPF is doing its job.

I completely agree with you that this is due to damage to the filter. However, if I drive 25-30 thousand miles after cleaning the EGR cooler, I think I’ll come to terms with the soot in the pipe:)
in 30 thousand I’m ready to spend half a day cleaning the cooler
