Door strap problem

On my '98 Jetta the drivers door can't be moved into position so that it will stay open even on a slight incline. Sometimes its slow to close, so that its open in the corner of my eye and as I get out of the car it hits me in the head. The other doors on the car seem to work and in other real cars that I've had, the door stays open by way of a notch in the door strap (if that's the right term).

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Does anybody have any ideas about this? Is the door strap worn or is there another mechanism that keeps the door from closing that ain't working right?

I had the same problem last week. I was lucky - the (2) hex bolts attaching the strap to the door were loose! Tightened the bolts and the problem went away. Before discovering the loose bolts, I was told by VW that a new strap ($28.00) was the answer. Yea right....

Tighten your bolts and you'll be fine...
