this is the part number you seek for the sub mini lever switch from Sayal: SGB-170B-1. You MUST still have the ones I mailed you! ;)
Fred: I do still have the extra ones you mailed me. AND I really appreciate it! I just want everyone to know...since I haven't installed them yet. I do feel like a silly bugger. :D It's going to go in though (I'm determined) and I'm going to give the extra one to anyone I can to help them. Will pass it on... in the excellent goodwill and nature of TDIClub!!

The Source By Circuit City Still Carries the Door Switch #2750016

I just got back from The Source here in Ottawa, and found that they still carry the switch that Radio Shack used to carry. I decided to check it out when I priced the door latch mechanisms at the dealership, and both front left and right units come in at about $230 each.

The part # is 2750016, and they cost $3.99 each. Here's a link to the website:

http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&product=2750016

We don't have Sayal stores in Ottawa, so I was glad to find this. I bought two; both front doors are pooched. A project for this weekend.

I hate these things. Both Jettas I have owned had them toasted.

I replaced my passenger side switch 3 times in a week last winter only to have it die again after 2 weeks. I never got around to replacing it again. I also replaced the driver side last winter and now it has started working only intermittently.

Another thing on my to-do list when it comes to my car. I've still got to fix the turn signal clicking when the signal isn't on too... and a CEL just came on today. :(

Sorry for the mostly unrelated post... it's a slightly related rant.

Can Fred describe or have the part no. as he had extra he gave me. If not, I can show you the 2 I have or you can have one if you want to try to do together.

It just seems this particular job will NOT get done with me alone for some reason....
I will let you know when I get around to doing mine but I don't expect time for at least a month or two.

So if this problem can be the cause of my car locking itself on me.... How do I tell which side's switch is toast?

open the door, one at a time. does the overhead light go on? does the small courtesy light in the bottom of the door turn on? does your auto lock function on your key fob lock the driver's side door when it is open? if you answer yes to any or all of these questions, try the passenger side door! does an alarm warn you that you have left the lights on when you open the door? or does it warn you when you have left your key in the ignition when you open the door? this tiny damned switch does all this! (tells the car the door is open)

Is the Sayal switch better than the Radio Shack/The Source switch? I've had 3 of the switches from The Source go since April (passenger side twice, driver's side once). I was going to replace them again today but if the Sayal switch will last me longer I'll go pick that one up first.

You've got to be kidding! Three of them?! Mine has been in since we did the swap, touching wood while I type. Anyone else that did the swap with the Sayal switch had theirs go since?

How long ago did you do the swap?

I think I'll just go to Sayal tomorrow. Maybe I'll have better luck with their switches.

If anyone is planning on doing the switch swap, and knows what they're doing, and is willing to host a mini-switch-GTG, my passenger side is pooched and I could use some help

Hmm I might be able to show up for that depending on the date/time. I've done a few.

I still haven't figured out the best way to get duct-tape residue off the glass though...

Just did my door switch this weekend. Nice to have it working after a year of not going..
Camping fuel for Colman type stoves works well for the tape goo...

Will it be safe on after market tint?
Good question and I do not know how it will interact with tint. Another tip I learn is use a regular pencil eraser but use a good one tho not the cheapo pencil tip eraser. Slowly go over the residue with the eraser & some elbow grease, it should work. Last resource, I would call up the tint place and ask them, they should know what to use.

Is anyone actually planning a mini-GTG for this? I've done it and could help. Otherwise I'll probably do mine tonight (since the Weather Network tells me there is a 0% chance of rain) or this weekend (next time there is 0% chance of rain).

Well, last night I was able to look at my switch and spare assembly and I pondered getting my dremel out to drill 2 holes. Then I have a couple small rivets, so I found the rivet punch and some small rivets. By this time it was late, and I had to get up early this am..

But I'm one step further (LOL). I think maybe tomorrow evening I will work on securing the switch, sauder, etc.

There is a design flaw in the OEM switch. It's a small, thin pin which gets pushed in and out. The aftermarket ones (sayal and Radio Shack) have a thicker base. Are you sure the switch is toast? I had a few small issues with my door after I changed the switch. Sprayed some contact cleaner in there and no more issues in over a year.

So I just revisited my passenger side switch (had to do the window clips on that side anyway) and found that the reason my switch stopped working is because of how I secured it. I didn't bother dremeling out the holes and using actual fasteners and instead used hot glue. This worked for about two weeks.

This time I had to slot and widen the existing holes and then I used a couple 4-40 Robertson bolts to screw into the holes in the switch. They tapped themselves and held on nicely. I hope it lasts longer this time.

Hopefully it's the same problem on the driver's side (this one worked for about 8 months).
