I appreciate the neutral feedback, but some won't accept it.
There are plenty of people who have used 5w 30 with zero issues, it was also mentioned a while back that it was a 'bad batch of cams'
Well, now that we've got the good natured? name calling out of the way, Windex does make a good point- suggesting that PD owners use a 5w30 oil on this predominantly N. American site is not good advice. Knowing is half the battle. :)

I'm in the 5w40 camp, but it is notable the European PD owners- who outnumber American PD owners by a very large margin, have been using VW spec 5w30 oil in their cars with far fewer cam issues. It's true that they tend to rack up fewer miles on average, but there are undoubtedly more high mileage PD TDIs over there using 5w30 on the OE cams than were ever sold here. Why that is I'm not sure. One theory I've heard is that many dealerships over here were servicing the cars with cheap 5w30 bulk oil instead of the correct spec. Or maybe they've just been getting better synthetic oils over there all along.
Just for fun I did a quick search on a website for used cars for sale in Sweden and searched VW, AUDI, SEAT and SKODA from 2000-2010, just to see the mileage of older TDI's over here. There were 1037 cars for sale, 366 was over 250k km. 157 more than 300k km and 18 over 400k km.

Oh and 291 were 4wd, 133 of them manual.

Sorry for going off topic :)

The actual oil viscosity is based on the operating temp. It’s a 5w40 or 5w30 when the oil temp is 100c. The oil cooler helps regulate oil temp however it’s not going to be the same temp as the coolant, it’s going to be hotter or colder than the coolant based on the ambient temp and engine load.

It’s possible to successfully use a 5w30 in a PD in cold environments because the oil temp would be low and the actual viscosity would be higher than a 30wt because the oil temp never reaches 100c.

If you lived in Arctic conditions you could possibly safely use a 0w20 oil in a PD with light loading normal driving routine because of the cold. Data logging of actual oil temp would tell you, then calculate operating viscosity from there.

Plenty of people use 5w30 without issues

Aslong as its 505.01 its absolutely fine

Plus alot have not understood my message properly
Quantum has finished the original 5w 40 platinum pd oil APPROVED, it is non existant

But 5w 40 platinum 'plus' still exists which is RECOMMENDED

There are just too many to list....
Only 18 over 400k km? LMAO... I all by myself have SIX Volkswagens with over that, three are WELL over that. That's not even a quarter million miles! Clearly Europeans don't mile the miles on like we do. :D

On a lighter note I found Mobil 1 5w-40 Turbo Diesel Truck on the shelf again at the local tractor supply store yesterday. I thought they were done making it, but guess not. I grabbed a few jugs. If I remember right the additive package was slightly better than T6?? Both are good oils, but the TDT was actually a few dollars less than the T6.

Well, it's only what is listed for sale at this very moment on one specific webpage. Not a complete list of any TDI in the country...glad I could make you happy 😃

505 wiped out my first cam by 240k, onto T6 5/40 now to see how it treats my second cam.
