Don't forget to cancel your extended warranty before you give your TDI back

Greetings,

I read this thread about the extended warranty cancellations.

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=467784&highlight=cancel+warranty

I recall that the extended warranty offered through Fidelity (JMA) can be cancelled and is prorated. I inquired with the dealership in July how to cancel it. They said just complete the cancellation form and that's it.

Has anyone done this yet?

Thanks

I had a warranty through a company called Route 66... I called my bank, they faxed me a couple of forms then submitted them to the company, I had my refund within 2 weeks.

I cancelled mine as soon as I decided to take the buyback, in May or June. I figured that since it was still under factory warranty, and still is, I probably didn't need it anyway. I got a good, prorated chunk of change...Mark

Yes, I called them, I don't remember the name now, started with M and was just initials. They were very nice about it. Because I had a note on the car, it was sent to them, credited to my loan and they sent me copies of the checks. I also confirmed the payment through the bank. There was some stuff that they would not refund, like their version of a "lojack" device, because they would not remove it from the car. The total refund was around 3k...Mark

If you have the Fidelity one, the VW "approved" and labeled on, you're supposed to go to the dealer you got it from and have them cancel it. But you can also call them and argue with them about it (about going through the dealer, not the cancellation itself - they will insist that you have to do it through the dealer until you point out the language in the contract that allows you to call them) and they will end up giving you a fax to fax in your request with certain info like current odometer reading and stuff like that.

Once that happens they will cancel it and if you have a note on it send the refund to the bank, otherwise they send the check to you.

What they actually end up doing is contacting the dealer that sold it to you and have them cancel it and issue the refund. They sent the dealer a letter and sent me a copy of the letter.

I cancelled two of them this summer. I no longer have the fax number. Your contract will have the phone number for them.

I'm looking at the paperwork for my extended warranty (Platinum through Fidelity). It looks like I paid $1675 for it (1716 including tax). My car is sitting at 52k miles and the warranty is good through 72k.

Question: Is it worth it for me to jump through the hoops to cancel? Are we talking a sizable refund? Or under 3-figures at this point?

I suspect you would get a little over $400 depending on how much time has elapsed. I figured using miles but they also figure on time (if you are 3 years into a 7 year warranty then the miles would rule as it is less for them to pay out).

Not a bad return for maybe 30-60 min of work (depending on how you do it).

I'm wondering if they'll transfer it to another vehicle. Personally I feel its a rip off to us that aren't even out of mfg warranty to be losing half of what we paid.

Thanks - that's definitely worth trying! I'd say so long it was somewhere in the triple digits, it's worth the effort.

I'll follow-up with my success/failure!

So I'm being told if I can get something on paper with the VIN# and the settlement date they will refund the warranty to that point.

Any ideas? I don't seem to have anything.

Thanks! I do have fidelity. So I should be able to ask the dealer to cancel it when I return my car? My appointment is coming up in few weeks.

Probably would work. I might call Fidelity and ask them about the timing as the dealer may not process the request immediately and by the time they do you may no longer own the car. Don't know if that matters.

I went to the dealership I bought my TDI from and asked to cancel the extended warranty. Surprisingly the finance manager was helpful and all I had to do was fill out a warranty cancellation form. I originally paid 3,000 for the warranty but since its prorated from the time you bought, I got 1,900 back the following week. I'll take it...put it towards the replacement car.

I never would thought of canceling my warranty, kind of forgot about it . I'll have to call the dealer tomorrow. But a question for those that might know , if my warranty is bundled into my loan 1) will cancellation delay getting an offer because of pay off changes 2) if I do nothing will I get reimbursed once the loan in paid off by VW ?

When I cancelled mine, the reimbursment went straight to the bank, because I had financed it with the car. I would think that the only way it would affect the buyback is that it lowers the loan balance and you will get to keep the difference. If you do not have a loan outstanding, it will be money in your pocket...Mark

Good question...but not owning the car would be the perfect reason to cancel the warranty! I may call Fidelity before the appointment. There are just too many things on my plate right now...I can't wait to get this over with.

Some here have received help from the dealer. I asked to cancel mine at the dealer and was told to call the # on my paperwork.

Is this a Fidelity one? If you call Fidelity, they will tell you to contact the dealer. Only if you stay on them long enough will the concede and tell you how to do it by fax. At least that was my experience. My Fidelity paperwork also encourage you to go through the dealer IIRC.

That is probably the difference then. If you don't have Fidelity, don't waste your time with the dealer. Just deal with the hassle and take care of it yourself. - might help someone out looking at this thread.

Yeah I had same experience. I had to ask for a supervisor who then told me to email my information in.

Went to dealer tonight to cancel my warranty. That part was very painless I signed a form and she told me to call her when I sell the car back to let her know the final mileage. She would cancel it that day and the money would be refunded to the lien holder. Unfortunately, before that I ran into a sales person who was a big VW defender and argued with me about VW's compliance with the deadlines.

Every day that you wait costs you money, because it is prorated. Of course, if your car takes a dump, you won't have the warranty. Mine is still on the factory one, so it didn't bother me any to cancel it...Mark

I know I am losing some money but I am too anxious to go without the warranty.

Anyone have issues canceling their extended warranty?
My buy back was 12/30 called the dealer the following week to cancel the warranty, sent in the confirmation that the car was bought back and was told I would need to sign paperwork.
3 wks later call the same dealer get a b.s. Run around about the status , call the following week and ask again I was told I would get a follow up later that day .
Indeed later that day I did get an email with the paperwork that needed to be signed, signed and send back next day . This was last week , finally today I call the actual warranty company CNA national and was told there was no attempt to cancel the policy.... but since I have a copy of the termination paperwork I could just fax it directly to the. Which I did.
I was then told there is an issue with canceling policies that are due to the vw buyback and to call back Friday to find out what is happening....
The dealer is Crowel vw here in CT anyone else have issues with them or get the same problem from the warranty company CNA or other ?
