Does your Passat w/DSG Roll when in Park?

Is it normal when the cars rolls Fwd. or Bwd's when parked? My car will roll in either direction 1-3 inches appox. more so when parking on an incline.
Using the hand brake takes care of the roll but I've never owned a car w/auto xmsn. that would do this. Is this normal for the DSG?

My DSG Golf rolled when in park, I always pulled the hand-brake before letting off of the foot-brake.

I've never owned one that didn't. Always make sure the handbrake is what is holding the car from rolling rather than the transmission in Park.

Come to stop, shift to N, set handbrake, let off brake pedal, allow car to roll against handbrake, shift into P and turn off engine.

What he said. Your plastic gear selector will thank you. :)

The movement you're experiencing is the vehicle rolling forward/backward until it comes to rest against the parking pawl. All auto's, including the DSG will do this. It's usually not a very robust item for supporting that kind of force/weight and eventually may sheer. Not good.

The DSG is not an "automatic transmission."

It is a computer controlled direct shift dual clutch manual transmission.

Language evolves continually.

Technically what you are referring to with the generic name "automatic transmission" is a transmission with a hydraulic torque converter and valving that shifts "automatically".

Since a DSG shifts "automatically" as well, it can now represent a generic label of an "automatic transmission" even though it's technology is different because it effectively does the SAME thing.

Automatically controlled manual transmission is the term I use when talking about it to someone who might care. For most people though, it's easier to just say it has an auto in it. Not many people are interested in explaining that its a dual clutch manual with electronics that control the operation.

I usually get a deer in the headlights stare when describing the DSG to coworkers & friends -- most of who drive Japanese appliances. But even from the pass seat are quick to notice the ride quality. :D

Rolling in Gear

I had my white 2012 Passat TDI SEL with DSG about 6 weeks (600 miles only) and I put it in park in my new not too deep garage. When I hit the door closing switch inside the garage it came down on the top of the rear bumper and left a nice big gouge. My stupidity without question but it would be nice if the dealers warned individuals unfamiliar with this transmission that the car will move after being put in park.

Other than the sh*t Bluetooth and useless GPS we love this car. Dark tint on the windows, putting on lower springs today to get away from the FWD look.

It won't move an inch if you just operate your vehicle properly.

There is not an autotrans (DSG or slush) made that won't move a little if it's on a grade and not parked with its weight held by either the parking pawl or hand brake.

This isn't a problem.

The handbrake isn't there for appearance, it's for function, use it, regardless of type of transmission in the vehicle.

Because it is an automatically controlled manual transmission, it seems to roll a little more than a traditional auto. Since I have a fairly steep driveway, I am in the habit of using the parking brake all the time, even on flat surfaces. Only difference from elfnmagik is that I don't shift into neutral. Just come to a stop with foot on the brake. Pull the parking brake. Release foot. Put foot back on brake and shift into park. My wife and daughters use the brake all the time too. My daughter's boyfriend complains about her setting the brake in his car because he never does and then she pulls hard enough that it is not easy for him to release it.

It's a little of both although I lost some faith over the last couple of months. First I learned that his mazda 3 hatch was an automatic. Second was when he did not know how to fill his windshield washers. My daughter said it was all she could do to keep from laughing out loud. Third was when he went in for a state inspection and the refused to do it because he had bald tires. Best thing for them (me) is letting her have the passat since he doesn't know how to drive a manual.

Hehe, guess not. You know the plastic gear selector assembly, which includes the gear selector module, on the DSG cars is in the neighborhood of $850? :D Not something I'd want to beat up on because I was too lazy to use the parking brake.

Former coworker had a ford aerostar with the shift lever on the floor. As they were sitting down for dinner, the neighbor came over to ask who their insurance company was. He had forgot to set the parking brake and did not get the van into park when he got out. Rolled out of their garage, across the street and hit the nieghbor's car in his garage, and then rolled back into the middle of the street. Imagine if some kid had been riding their bike down the street when the van started rolling.

Use the parking brake, you won't be sorry for a two second operation.
