Are both engines called a 1Z engine in the 96 and 97 Passat TDI? Is the timing belt, tensioner and roller the same in both years? Does the AHU and 1Z have the same timing belt, tensioner and roller?

the 96 and 97 both could have the 1z. Some later model 97's got an ahu. All timing belt related items for a 1z/ahu are the same. They are practically the same engine.

PS- No need to start another thread from your original you started yesterday.

thanks for clarifying the timing belt items are the same on the 1z and ahu and I appreciate your concern about another thread being started.

The only difference of any consequence is the valves being 8mm and requiring different guides and stem seals.

Otherwise, I don't think anything else that might be different is really going to come up as a big issue.
