Once you remove the injectors the copper washers will either be stuck to the bottom of the injector or you will see them on the top of the engine case.
You might also want to change the IQ settings and bump the number a little.
I would actually first see if you cannot get it to smoke less by changing the IQ value through the vag-com, then if needed change the copper washers.
Or you'll find that the injectors were installed like mine were, with STEEL washers. Thick steel ones - no joke. I retrieved them from the head with a magnet.

No way, steel washers? I would bet that those are not VW OE parts
And when you changed out the washers what changes did you experience?

When I bought my 98 NB from the mechanic that put it together who was a hack when it comes to VW's, it smoked like a freight train. After finding this thread I pulled the Injectors. He had installed prothe nozzles and a prothe IP. The washers were the steel washers you use on the exhaust manifold studs. He didn't use ANY on the exhaust manifold and just reused the locknuts, and he used 4 on the injectors.

After properly seating / sealing the injector bodies with the correct washers the smoke was reduced by 80% or so. Then the injection pump grenaded. (long story) Definately very important to verify that you've got the correct which not only allow the injector body to seal, but also sit deeply enough into the combustion chamber for the correct atomization of fuel.

Car now has a new 11MM pump and balanced DrivBiWire PP520s.

excellent info! I have an ALH tdi 5 speed with 11mm pump and 205 nozzles. It pulls and smokes like a train under full throttle. I'll check the washers. Thanks.

I would never recommend any one purchase anything from hansdieselparts, I have purchased a few things from them and everything i have tried to use has been ****, just pure junk. Even the special tool to remove the tamper proof bolt from the top of the injector pump was just scrap, did not even work one time. They also go under other names, i would NOT look for anything from them to be quality. Others have posted about this company and have not seen anything good about this parts company.

Since you're in Kentucky, just go through Paramedick. He can point you in all the right directions.

Old posting, curious to see if the washers I'm using from IDParts are on the list of "approved" washers, or if they are responsible for my smoke. The TT made 297tq on the dyno, so I can't fathom it getting much better with my setup, but if it could, I'd certainly like to explore that.

However, if the IDParts washers are just fine, I'd hate to waste 2 hours and some perfectly good washers and risk springing more injector line leaks just to end up at the same outcome.

The washers you got from ID are fine. Im not aware of anyone supplying bad ones for years.
