I have a 2014 Jetta sedan. Has 150k. I understand the dmf is pretty common. But if the car is idling does the clatter stop if the dmf is bad? Today I was idling for about 10 minutes. Started to chatter after about 2 minutes then at about 8 minutes idle time it stopped. Then there is no chatter while in neutral or after the car has been driving for a while and park it and idle for a while

what I am trying to pin down. Is could there be a chance it is the serpentine tensioner cause I do see that jumping around. I do plan on changing that this weekend

That my friend is the Dual Mass Flywheel beginning to fail. It's very common and is a maintenance part. You can search this forum and you will see instructions and sound clips.
It will get progressively worse and if left to long it can actually come apart.
It's not a bad job to do but lots of local shops who work on VWs shoulbe able to give you a quote

Yep. DMF is on the way out. Get it handled sooner than later. If you plan to keep the car for a long time have the shop look at replacing the rear main seal while they are in there.

Thank you, it sounded like the dmf was going out but a coworker said to look at the tensioner pulley. I was like now way I can get that lucky lmao. I’ve watched a couple videos on how to replace it. It doesn’t seem hard. Definitely a more challenging task. But more time consuming than anything

also thinking of doing a couple might as well parts too. So far I was thinking of doing the thermostat and the rear main. Any other additions?

Hmm..the rear main seal is a maybe at 150k. You need the special tool AND you really need to drop the oil pan to do it right. If it's in good shape I usually leave it.
Thermostat is no where near the DMF so you might want to pass on that too.
I would recommend a transmission jack as the transmission is crazy heavy.
I also recommend a flywheel lock tool.
Not a bad job but really helps to have a second person when lining up the bell housing. Do not use bolts to pull the housing together. If you line it up correctly it will just slide together with no gap.

I do have a car lift and a transmission jack, should be good there. I’ll look into the flywheel lock tool

Would you recommend new bolts for certain items? I was going to play safe and atleast do new flywheel bolt.
Also doing the downpipe at the same time

if your tensioner is jumping around check that overun clutch on your alternator . if it shreds that serpentine belt it could jump time go boom. seems like you have 2 separate issues
