Display MPG's vs. At The Pump

Just curious as to what drivers have experienced with the in-car mpg readout and what they actually get at the pump. My Civic Hybrid is about +3 mpg's in the car while the wife's Insight is +1.

Shouldn't this be in with Toyota threads, or are these Mark 6 Hondas? This should be in another forum.

I want to know how accurate the VW calculators are in the MKVI vehicles. I merely used my current car for comparison since it is so inaccurate. I'm hoping VW's real time consumption display is more reliable than our Hondas.

My 2010JSW seems to be pretty accurate. I have the in-car readout reset each trip, but my actual MPG seems to be close to what the in-car readout averages. I would be suprised if it is more than 1 MPG off.

I thought all German engineering was 'precision'? :)

As long as it's consistent and pretty close I'll be happy. It just sucks when it reads 43.1 in the car then 39.8 at the pump.

Those of us with Suzuki motorcycles have to deal with a 10% difference in our speedometers. If you want to go an actual 60mph, you have to have 66mph on your speedo. The odometer works fairly accurately, but there is a designed-in error.

Remember that the mileage measurements will vary based on your tires. Different tire diameter = different readings, not only on the odometer, but on anything that uses the mile measurement, like your mileage. There are differences in diameters between different brands of tires. There is also a difference between the brand new tire (larger diameter) and a ready-to-be-replaced tire (smaller diameter.) They lose about an inch on the diameter over time.

That can account for a few % difference right there. So even the Germans can't be as 'precise' as you'd like them to be. :)

My MFD varies between spot on to about 1.5 mpg high or low. Never more than that. The MFD seems more accurate with city tanks than highway, for some reason. I reset my MFD#2 at reach fill up and use it as a general guide to what kind of mileage I'm getting per tank. I've been comparing my MFD to hand calculations since the beginning. I think the accuracy of the display is impressive, actually.

I've noticed my display has always been +0.6 to +0.8 mpg higher then actual. Not too bad.

It has nothing to do with only Suzuki bikes ...

It's actually law that the speedometers must be optimistic. Can you imagine that a speedo would be showing less than real speed? The legal consequences are endless ....

My Golf is +8%. No big deal. My Honda bike used to bike +8% as well. My Suzuki bike is closer to +10% (DRZ).

On the other hand my Golf MPG is spot on ... Optimistic on the speedo part, spot on as fuel consumption. I like that set up ... :D

I understand.....it's just that Suzuki bikes are just notorious for their excessively optimistic speedos.

In my Golf, going an actual 70mph requires that the speedo shows 73....about a 4% difference.

My fuelly calculated MPG seems to be about 1 MPG better than the MFD info, usually. Sometimes I do forget to reset the MFD for a couple miles after filling up though.

I've kept careful track of my mpg, I am averaging just under 42mpg with just over 4500 miles traveled total. I have noticed mpg going up as the engine breaks in and the weather warms up. My best thus far was 49.8mpg over the course of an hour driving on the freeway, I covered about 65 miles and wasn't trying to get good mileage. My best tank was 46mpg average over around 530 miles. I would say the MFD is pretty close to spot on, I haven't specifically tried to calculate it though.

I totally agree with that. My DRZ speedo, not only is ugly, but overly optimistic as well. It took me a while to get used to seeing occasionally 140 on my clock when on freeways ....

well, I don't know if you could actually compare the "at pump" calculation to the display. The display only averages the MPG for that particular trip and not the actual tank full. So with that I have noticed my display on several 50-150 mile trips averaging 44-47 mpg, but "at the pump" method I averaged 44 mpg on the tank full. I made it 592 miles on that tank before refueling.

Really? I thought there was one for trip and one for tank. Please check your manual.

Not the first nor will it be the last person that hasn't read the manual.

sportriderseattle, there are two memory displays on the MFD. The first automatically resets after the ignition has been shut off a few hours. The second automatically resets after XXXX miles, time, or gallons (IIRC, 9999 miles, 999 gallons, 99 hours 59 minutes). Both can be manually reset.

the owner's manual? that thing is the biggest piece of poo. They might as well have wrote it in German.

I must admit if there were any one thing that I dislike about my car it's that freakin' manual.

Well let us help you out a bit,

The MFD has three mpg displays.
1. Present mpg
2. Trip mpg (notated with a small #1 in the display). This will reset automatically after two hours of not driving.
3. Tank mpg (notated with a small #2 in the display). This is usually reset manually... ie after fueling up.

PS: read your manual, you'll learn some things.

I've calculated to be about 1mpg LESS on the MFD vs Actual.

That being said... here's a photo from my last 300mile round trip:

None!
My trip MPG always reads in the low 5s (l/100 km) when I shut off the car but when I fill the tank and divide by the trip odo I find that I am really averaging in the low 6s. My speedo is about 10% high, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I usually find mine very close. recent 1100 mile one way trip Vegas to Washington state nonstop my mfd trip mpg showed 50.4 mpg, calculated at pump 49.8

on trip back again non stop mfd showed 51.3... calc at pump was 50.8 mpg.

non stop just means no sleepovers during trip. Did fill up halfway and a few leg streatcher breaks. preplanned for fuel stop where convenient and cheaper and having range left just in case.
