Funny. We get our registration costs back when we turn in the plates. If we turn in the plates after 1 month we pay for the registration renewal we get back the registration costs for 23 months. And we have the highest median income in the country. I guess that isn't why we aren't whining about the registration cost of a vehicle.

And you get the second year back if you turn them in any time before the end of the first year. But the 'median income' stat amazes me given that such a high percentage of our residents don't work.

In Virginia, you get a check for pro-rated registration fees after you sell a vehicle. But in our case, the registration fee is nominal. Just a minor amount of paperwork, (and maybe 40$) and you can do it online.

The big ones for us are the personal property tax, insurance. Sales tax can be a big check, but you only pay that once when you first purchase a vehicle. The rest of the stuff is pro-rated when you sell.

All the government contractors. The federal government does a good job of keeping Maryland and Northern Virginia's economies strong.

From Page 65, Ms. Cabraser's testimony"

"We didn't want cars to be dinged for age and continued use, and so we froze the cars in time. We wanted to reward folks that had driven their cars less, particularly less after the scandal, who would garage them."

I find this particularly irritating. They actually think people should have garaged a car they spent tens of thousands on? How many of us have options to other means of transportation?

So you reward someone that garages their car, while those who have to continue (for financial reasons) to use it as their only means of transportation lose value, through no choice of their own.

Your irritation is well justified. I don't think many people buy cars to fill an empty slot in the garage. But those that have done so are worthy of praise?? The kind of thing one would hear in a presidential debate.

According to the top of page 8 of the FTC Order....

(2) registered with a state Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent agency or held
by bill of sale by a non-Volkswagen Dealer in the United States or its territories as of June 28,
2016;
In California, you can register a car as "not operating" for $10/year (it may have gone up). The vehicle can't be driven on public roads in such status but you can get a permit to drive it to smog test & dmv.

I also agree with this frustration because essentially what this means is: If you have the "means" (aka money) to sit on the vehicle, we're going to give you MORE money. So.... more money for the wealthy...?

I'm not whining, I think the process is fair to most extents, and to cover 500,000 people, but saying things like this drives me nuts cause it only reminds me, I'm "poor" by most people's standards, haha.

Some of us bought several cars to fill slots in the garage. ;)

So I was doing a little more digging, and found the judge's schedule. Looks like he planned to be unavailable from 10/19 - 10/21. And looks pretty busy starting next week. I wonder if he was planning to review everything through tomorrow and release his decision before the weekend or first thing Monday: http://12.130.78.145/CEO/cfd.aspx?7134#Notes

Also, another link to the Court page related to the settlement, not sure if it was posted elsewhere, other than direct links to the transcripts: http://www.cand.uscourts.gov/crb/vwmdl

I uploaded my documents on Sept 30th and they still show Status: Documents received and under review. How long did this take for others? Also, I do not see a phone number on the site to check in. Does anyone have the number they could share?

Yup good catch. It's not Judge Breyer's first rodeo. I said yesterday it would be late Friday or 8am Monday morning when he would grant final approval.

They're trying to reward people who are concerned about the emissions. If you don't care about the emissions then you aren't likely to garage your car. If you do care about the emissions but you don't have the means to garage your car, then you still pay for the use of the car albeit at a much reduced rate of depreciation.

..... claimed VW Judge "might" raise the settlement by $5,000,000,000

........ Thoughts,
NFW (No F***** Way). Primarily because the judge doesn't get to just change an agreement among the parties. Secondarily because there's no way VW is going to agree to a last-minute increase of their liability by 35%.

Do you just make this crap up, or is someone else feeding it to you? If the latter, try to be a bit more critical.

News Flash

My local news station just reported the judge has made several key changes including:
New car for everyone including anyone that ever even had one sniff of the toxins oozing from any TDI.
Also compensation for any carpal tunnel damage done to a certain TDI member due to endless posting since the scandal broke.
Lastly 5000 dollars to each TDI club member that had to live with the endless mindless posts causing traumatic forum syndrome.

Cute. But it's the folks behind the TDI that are sniffing. Not the ones in it. So anyone that's ever been behind a TDI on the road gets a new car? Sounds good. That's probably 50M folks.

And a bonus $500 for those who strip their cars, as they will save VW considerable dismantling work on cars going to the crusher.

Traumatic Forum Syndrome (TFM)...that is awesome!!!! ;)
Yeah, TFM. That's what I have. I bet I can get SS Disability check for that. I'm filing as soon as I get my cash from VW and roll up to the SS administration in my new Audi e-tron .;)

That's BS. It's a ding on mileage, plain and simple and they are just trying to hide that fact. They argued several responses that revolved around mileage, so I'm sure they figured it to be overall beneficial.

Basically, they are fining the owners for continuing to pollute, a choice we didn't make, and some cannot avoid. And the point is moot, anyway - if you can't afford to park it, it doesn't matter how you feel about the emissions. The cars should not depreciate during the time it takes them to get all this done, regardless of miles, because we are stuck with them at this point. It's not our fault we have to keep them this long.

Took one month for me. Uploaded on 9/19 and got a response on 10/18. Everything was approved except my DL which they said they could not read. Uploaded a new copy of my DL on 10/18. Hope I don't need to wait another month.

Last things first: there is a reason that character is on my ignore list.

Then there's the question of the hair-curling experience of reading person after person post to this forum who has absolutely not the slightest clue about how the legal system or the judiciary operates, or its designated role in our government.
The only thing worse is when I see comments coming up on the U.S. Constitution.....
