Took the 2012 Golf TDI in for 30K service (final no cost service under warranty). Dealer recommended getting their "Diesel Injection Service" at $270 saying carbon builds up in the injector system and should be cleaned periodically. Searched forums and see nothing regarding this service. Comments?

(Have been using Opti-Lube XPD if that makes any difference.)

After 30K you won't have any build up of carbon. The only benefit of this service is to increase profits for the dealer. I , too, was offered this service and declined it. 40K later no problems.

All turned back to VW. Now a 2017 Hundai Tuscon. Not a single squalk in 10k miles.
But... Did they promise to polish your tailpipe along with the injector cleaning?

From people I know who have worked at dealerships, this is how their "free" services are meant to go. They get you in for the oil change/tire rotation, the techs are then supposed to find a bunch of other things they can try to get you to pay for so that the dealer can make some money. Whether anything actually needs to be done or not is irrelevant, the tech has to recommend something, anything to get some money from you.

At 30k miles there shouldn't be a damn thing wrong with the car including any kind of carbon build up. At least they didn't recommend new spark plugs...

Stealerships do it and it doesn't matter which make. They got the wife for $60 for a brake inspection during her 'free' rotation at 28K on her new Sorento. I explained what they did and she was mad at herself for falling for it. She did not fall for the $35K tranny flush and came down on them so hard the service manager called and apologized, probably because Kia came down on them when she ratted them out. They know not to play the games with her now.

I had a Ford dealer do a "99 point inspection" on something I own with a V10. Came back with a number of things including needing a "throttle body" cleaning. Mind you, this was based on inspection and they even provided a photo of what a dirty throttle body would look like..

Same deal, they'll run a cleaner through the intake manifold and flush all the badness out.

I declined of course, but took it home and proceeded to take it apart so I could clean it myself...

Low an behold, it wasn't dirty at all and looked brand new... I took a photo, called Ford back, the story changed to they "recommend service based on miles" - and that it never was "inspected" as dirty.

These are high margin service things, almost pure profit. Very little labor, very little cost... Stay away...

Thanks for the input - Good to have this forum!
Looked for an alternative service organization for routine maintenance near Rockville, Md. Found "German Auto Works" that service VW TDI. Sounded good. My BMW shop will do non-diesel type work like oil, tires, suspension, etc.
