Delvac 1 vs. Mobil 1 ?!?

There seems to be several different oils sold under the same name :

Delvac 1 SHC [EU]

Delvac 1 [US]

and

Mobil 1 0W40 [EU]

Mobil 1 0W30 [US]

then there are some special oils for VW-TDIs :
Mobil SHC Formula V [Extended drain 0W30]
Mobil Synt S Special V [PD-TDI 5W40]
- But I couldn't find any datas for these ..

Only Mobil 1 0W40 (and those special oils) seems to have VW-approval !

The question is which one is technically best for TDI ..?
(And what is the difference between EU and US variants ?!)

"In the U.S., Delvac 1 has the correct rating for the TDI."
Not so !! The motor is designed and manufactured by VWAG ..
VWAG gives special requirements for engine oils.
When particular oil passes these requirements it is certified by VWAG.
(Hence VW505.00 and VW506.00 etc. certified oils ...)

So this is not so simple !!

Now I am wondering if VW-approved oil is always better than some
othervise state-of-art oil (but without VW-approval) ...

There are just too many different quality/performance standards around ..
.. and the lack of proper product specifications

I have looked and looked and cannot find any oils named "Delvac 1"?

I have found Mobil 1 - but so many choices - red, green, or what color cap?

Where do you get your oils? How bout in Washington State?

Try a "Shell " oil /gas station that sells diesel to truckers or a ShellTruckStop!

If you want to see what Delvac 1 looks like, go to http://www.avlube.com/ and you will find a photo of Delvac 1. You can also buy it there! :) Even with shipping the delivered to your door price may be less than you can buy it for in a local truck stop when one includes tax, etc..

VWAG in the owner's manual: "Use CH-4 rated oil"

On the back of Delvac 1: "CH-4"

YES, it really IS that simple.

Now let's stop this petty bull**** bickering.

PWM,

Given the climate of Finland, if you can find this TDI specific (VW 506 spec) 0w-30 extended drain stuff, that's what I'd use. The PD-TDI oil (VW 505.01 spec) should be excellent as well and would be my second choice.

The Delvac 1, SHC (Euro version) that has a TBN of 15.9 would NOT be appropriate. That stuff is specifically made to reduce deposits in specific types of HD European diesel engines. It has a very high ash content of 1.8% as a result (due to the organo-metallic detergents).

"VWAG in the owner's manual: "Use CH-4 rated oil"
"
- I think it says so in VWoA manual !!
(New VWAG manual makes statement about VW-approvals ..)

"TDI specific (VW 506 spec) 0w-30 extended drain stuff, that's what I'd use."
- Asides it's darn expensive it has tightly spec'd thermal (-capacity) properties in order to enable the use of Hella's electronic dip-stick.
(This device is of thermo-electrical type : Oil quality is measured from thermal conductivity and -capacity.)
But there is no information available if the additive package is truly any better ...
(Hella etc. states that careful monitoring of the oil condition enables the extension up to three times of the change interval WITH THE SAME OIL !!)

"The PD-TDI oil (VW 505.01 spec) should be excellent"
- Early PD-TDI had problems with the oil lubrified (hydraulic coupling) PD-pump.
This was solved with VW505.01 spec - by partially sacrificing other properties !
(Often the can states that it's ONLY FOR PD-engines !)

"The Delvac 1, SHC (Euro version) .. NOT be appropriate."
- So it seems .. won't touch

.. So these have been the basic reasons to stick with Mobil 1 0W40 (different than in US) which has the VW505.00 etc.

But I'm still wondering ...

pair o' dubs :

If you're even in Seattle, you can get Delvac 1 from Ballard Oil which is right on the canal at 24th Ave NW. Or you can go the Mobile website, look up the phone number for distributor information and 3 minutes later you will have a source that is relatively close to you.

Back in June of 99, my dealer wanted to put Mobil 1 in my Jetta. I told them it lacked the correct diesel ratings. The service manager had no clue. So I sent a note to Mobil and asked them about Mobil 1 in a diesel. And no, the dealer still wanted to put Mobil 1 in the car.

From Mobil in June of '99.

Mr. Switka,

Thank you for contacting Mobil.

There seems to be some confusion on the part of your dealer. Mobil 1
should NOT be used in an application that calls for an CF-4 or CG-4 API
rated motor oil. Instead, you should use Delvac 1, which is a synthetic
5W-40 diesel motor oil from Mobil that meets all diesel API
requirements. If the dealer can not provide it for you, Delvac 1 is
available at most truck stops. If you like you can also order directly
by calling 1-800-ASKMOBIL.

If you have any additional questions, you may contact us at our E-mail
address: lubes@ffx.mobil.com or by phone at 1-800-ASKMOBIL.

Sad part is, VW specifically told me that Mobil 1 was fine and that the dealer is well within their right to use it.

Pull out your manual and have them read the oil specs to the service manager and then challenge them to find those specs on a Mobil 1 bottle of oil.

Mobil 1 even has stamped on the front "For Gasoline Engines".

Find a CG-4 label on Mobil 1 5w30. I think the 15w50 carries a CG rating in Mobil 1.

0W40 Mobil one is available in the us... Seems to be in short supply and costs just as much as Delvac, so Delvac is what I use.

I think it costs $$ for Mobil to qualify oil. THe Mobil-1 is CF rated. For many light automobile diesel, it's fine. Of course it doesn't hold the soot or TBN as Delvac-1.

I have no problem using M-1 unless you are a heavy city driver. Mercedes USA recommended CF-4 for their oM606 engines(96-99). They came with 0W40 mobil from the factory. MBUSA now says CF Mobil-1 is fine for all their automobiles.

Of course, Delvac is what is recommended(CF-4) and is great. Amsoil also makes some fine products. INfact, AMSoil buys their synthetic base stock from Mobil

Hey everyone back from the nice TDI vacation to Colorado. About 5k total mileage and, of course, zero trouble. Wish I didn't have to use the snow tires as they didn't help the MPG any.

Anyway, regarding OIL. My dealer also told me to use either Mobil 1 or Castrol syn. Not a word about Delvac! Thank goodness for this site or I would have used the wrong oil on the change.

Take care everyone, happy to be back in WI
