I’ve posted about this in the TDI subreddit already and have gotten some feedback. (I apologize if this is the wrong sub Chanel to post very new to this form)

Essentially my EGR and DPF have started to fail at 103k miles, I have a few speculations on why this has happened. One being my short tips and 3 letting people drive my car like it’s a M3. (When I told them it doesn’t work like that) Besides the point.

My two options I have came to are the following due to living in the great state of California.
(Driven about 20k miles since getting the car in March, 18,000 or so were highway)

Replace EGR and DPF and do a Stage 1-2 Malone tune, along with using DPF additives more since I live in the city now.(Along with buying a bike)
(Around 4500-5000)
Delete the car with a Rawtek/Darkside kit and do a stage 2 Malone tune (I don’t have any tools sinceI just moved or feel comfortable doing this so I would go to Colorado or Flagstaff)
Around (3500-4500)

My thought process right now is to sadly suck it up, go back to stock, put a tune on it and run additives more frequently and bike to work. Rather than try to dodge California emissions and the fines I might face when I do the delete.

If I do a delete do you have any suggestions or other modifications I should do like adding a CP4 prevention kit.

I didn't realize you can get a tuned car to Smog in CA. But if you can, and if you can get Malone to write a tune that takes the regen scheme back to pre-dieselgate, I'd replace the stock hardware and go that way.

I highly doubt you can even find anyone who's willing to take the risks involved in selling you delete stuff over there.... let alone actually DO IT for you.

Anyone who will ship to USA will also ship to commifornia. The work, however, will have to be DIY, which OP is unwilling to do.

It happened because the DPF cracked.

There aren't any fines. Just failed smog and no registration until returned to stock.

i have personally had success with a malone stage 2 tune and factory emissions equipment.
about 90K on my warranty DPF currently.

stage 2 will ruin your MT clutch eventually.

Kind of on topic, and maybe a solution. I've heard of guys "tuning out" or "turning off" the egr with a malone tune but leaving everything stock. Seems like this would by-pass at least part of the problem and allow you to return to stock of needed. Has anyone on here JUST run a tune to "delete" the egr that would chime in? An do you know if anything needs to be removed or unplugged? Considering it for my Q5 and live in an equally restrictive state...

The EGR delete from Malone is just won't throw a CEL if you unplug the EGR. It will still work if plugged in.

That makes sense. Do you know what sensor needs to be unplugged? I haven't been able to find a diagram showing where the egr valve is located in a second gen 3.0, 2015 q5. I'm thinking (hoping not) I'll need to pull the manifold and it's down in the valley...
