Delete Advice

Hi, Mike here. I drive a 2015 Passat SEL Premium, DSG, just performed the 40K mile maintenance, 124000 on odometer. I commute ~200 miles a day, mostly highway. Is the added fuel economy worth it to perform the delete? It's about ~$1500 for the exhaust and tune based on some research I've done and plan to do the delete myself. Looking for advice on cost/benefit analysis and real world added fuel economy.

Reliability is the real reason to delete. ROI based solely on increased mpg will likely takes 8-10 years to achieve, depending on your yearly miles.

My stock 2013 Passat averages 42-45mpg on my highway commute. For me, the reason to delete would be that when the DPF or other part of emissions equipment fails, it will be cheaper to delete than replace. I'm happy to wait until that time comes.

Agreed on the reliability part. The constant Regens and high % egr usage makes these a dirty engine internally. They run hot, too, which creates its own issues long term. You may pick up a slight mpg gain depending on driving habits and tune. You'll also be able to switch to a good 5w40 CK4 oil and ditch the expensive 507 5w30, a savings in itself.

Thank you for the advice. My post dieselgate warranty is out. I think I'll wait until it's time for dpf maintenance. I currently avg 45 mpg (mostly highway driving) and my best is 48.25. I drive like a granny and coast/use cruise control as much as possible. To me I think it would be worth it if it will get me to 50+mpg at least that's what my gut says. It's kind of dumb but the difference is filling up every 3.5days to once a week if I can get at least 50. And if that's the case, to me it's worth it?

You have to factor all the expenses: Fuel, Time, Speeding tickets. What's better, 50mpg at 60mph, or 60mpg at 45mph, or 40mpg at 80mph?
Thank you. Part of my morning commute is a ~60 mile stretch where I set cruise control between 57 and 63, give or take and I usually have minimal traffic so I don't need to adjust. Is it realistic to get at least 50 mpg at 60 mph?

In warm weather, around 50 mpg, yes.

I think you're still covered by dieselgate per that ^

On the delete part, the other responses are dead on. I knew I wanted to delete but I had no real 'need' to until recently when the adblue tank issues came up. So I paid for the Malone tune to delete SCR, but also grabbed the full delete tune (it's no additional cost). So when the DPF finally bites it, I'm going to plan on the full delete at that time. I'm at 213+k miles on my 15.

What avg fuel economy are you seeing with the tune?

I just tuned it a week ago so too early to tell! My issue is since COVID I'm not going into the office (100 miles each day) as much so my fuel economy isn't the best. I'd like to go a full week commuting to see.

Honestly, its worth it for reliability and thats it when it comes to cost. Fuel savings is minor, yeah you may gain a bit more per tank but ROI vs Cost, its not a reason to do it just for that.

^^ That too. Talk about this on the forums is usually a bad thing and not recommend. We try to keep this forum not the subject of illegal discussions.

No worries. If you're ever unsure of a topic or something that may go against the rules, there is always FAQs that can provide some info!

I have Kerma tune with all emissions intact, getting about a 6 percent improvement in mpg as compared to the Dieselgate tune. 49 mpg tank to tank avg, in the summer mostly rural roads at speeds under 60. I take about a 5 mpg hit on winter fuel, cold conditions and a car kept outside
