The def light is back on...started at 20 miles to no restart. I just sold the car, I got my daughters jetta tdi and didn't need 2 cars...I feel awful and would like to give her some direction.... :( any ideas?

step 1: read the warranty supplement that came with the car when the emissions system was "fixed" circa 2017 by a VW dealer (I am assuming your car had the "fix", almost all were fixed and owners received $$ from VW to boot) and see if the warranty is still in effect. IF so, go straight to dealer.

step 2: If step 1 indicates the warranty is not in effect, you have two options:
A) take the car to a mechanic skilled in VW TDI diesels (not necessarily a dealer) and expect to spend a lot of dough doing some repairs to the emissions system, e.g., installing a new Diesel Particulate Filter, or other components, possibly thousands of dollars, and the car could be out of services for days, weeks or even longer. OR
B) consider tuning the car with Kerma tune. https://kermatdi.com/
The cost information and installation instructions are found at their website. This will likely be a long-term solution for your emissions system woes, at least it was for me, as I was having a similar issue a year and a half ago.

CAVEAT - without knowing more about your car, maintenance history, miles, previous repairs, etc, it is hard to be more specific or perhaps send you in a different direction. But, in any case, start with STEP 1 above.

You cant feel awful. You know you did right when owning the car. You can't predict the future of the car out of your care.

Unfortunately like many/most cars nowadays (sound old don't I?). VW/Audi has become an enthusiast/brand loyal type car. Certainly not a Toyota in reliability. I go back to 1981 with my 57 baja or 150$ 59' barn door.bus. WILL my ex-once pristine 11' C.P.O. JSW be on the road under the new ownership as long as my high mile 08' Tacoma replacement?

Best fot the new owner, sounds like they got a good start to the cars life, just have to pay the piper more as these cars age?

We bought a 06 tdi. When I was looking at it I didn't notice but the DMF was clattering a little. Once I got it home I noticed. I messaged the guy I bought it from and he said he didn't notice. So that's the way of the world when you buy a used car. If you sold it as is, where is it's not on you. Your nicer than most for caring. Maybe give her $500 back and call it even.

I couldn't find "proof" of timing belt change at 80k...I dropped price to cover the cost of belt, water pump, pulley ...than found a vw guy near me to do it....she lives 2 hours from me...not likely she'd go back to him...
