December 2008 Mileage Thread

This is a month by month competition. Every time you make an entry it will be added up and recorded together according to the fuel type and car/year you are driving.
THIS IS NOT an individual tank competition (or a partial tank competition for that matter).

Entries will be accepted until January 5th 2009, but remember, report tanks FILLED IN December.

Entry Format:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Driver:
Miles:
Gallons:
Model Year:
Model:
Tranny:
Fuel Type:

You are allowed to put more than one fill up in a post, so long as each fill up conforms to format.

MPG: (optional since I will calculate it automatically anyway)
(anything else you would like to add)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hint on entering your data - after the colon ( ":") put a space.

US GALLONS AND MILES

TRANNY TYPES:
(x) A = x speed automatic
(x) M = x speed manual *
DSG = direct-shift gearbox
CVT = continuously variable transmission
* if you have swapped in a taller 5th gear please noted this (ie: 5M w/.681)

FUEL TYPES:
Bx = biodiesel - x is the percentage of bio
Biodiesel use equal to, or more than B20, will be indicated in GREEN.
ULSD / LSD / D2 = normal petroleum based diesel
Also please note if it's winterized

- please note if you are using a fuel additive (ie: ULSD +PS)
- - Power Service (PS); Stanadyne (ST); Redline (RL)

Posts not in format will not be tallied / corrected. If I have to do any editing to get your post in format (or to get the correct name), it will not be counted. Feel free to correct your own posts to get them in format.

Please do not go back and add additional fillups to a post. Multiple fillups per post is fine as long as all fillups are in format. If the driver name is not the same as your post name - this will be considered "Not in format" and will not be counted. Only exceptions would be "and spouse" etc.

5 gallons of B100 and then filled with (probably winterized) ULSD.

Taller snow tires are on now so longer "miles" mean fewer in number. Miles listed are odometer reading, and are not adjusted to compensate for taller tires.

this is our first tank of gas in this car

she is not focusing on fuel economy (rpms a little higher). this is >90% around town driving (45mph & 35mph limits)

live in nc, temps are moderate, 30's to 50's now, most trips are also short, so car really never gets a chance to warm up much

computer says that the tank mileage was 29.6m/g, pretty accurate with epa estimates for city. expect it to improve with break in and warmer weather.

when it was on the highway, it was easily averaging mid 40s cruising at ~60.

Jayzon, the driver is identified by screen name.

Quick! Go back into your post, click on "edit" in the lower corner and change the driver to the screen name. Do this before your post is ignored for not following format outlined in post #1.

Waiting to see if Chevron gets better mpg because of higher cetane rating. This tank was using Shell.

Mostly highway with a bit of local driving at the Pittsburgh end of the run at dead cold. Tire pressure knocked down so that it would be VW specified pressure at ambient (I did this in the "warm" garage so added 3 psi to make up for COLD). All runs in sub freezing weather, part of a run through snow and ice conditions. The ESP worked fine.

:(

Not even the *magical* (sarcasm from another thread) rolling hills of southern IL, KY and TN can help MPG this time.

Winter fuel, head and cross winds and fuel-thirsty hills.

I have no idea why my milage slipped from the 60's down to 57 mpg despite finally getting into the 700 club, my best tank thus far. I did fill up at a different station , a different pump from the one I usually use, but the filling was the same (to the consternation of the people behind me); i.e. I wait for the foam to disperse and fill slowly to the filler neck as I have for countless times (Ventectomy in 2003). Also it has been cold for Florida,in the low 30s and the driving was all city, no road trips. I keep the tires at 45 Psi.
I'll try again.
