Debating between an Automatic or Manual 2011 Jetta TDI

^ yeah I guess I was looking at the http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm
fiquires and it's says the same for both DSG and Manual tranny.

I compared 2010 Golf TDI DSG and 2011 VW Jetta TDI 6spd. Both have 7.8 city and 5.6 highway. Combined are 6.9L/100km.

For the 2010s, the DSG EPA listed F E at 42 MPG and the 6 MTs were 41 MPG.

For the 2011s, both transmissions are listed at 42 MPG.
So for the 2011s, it least they partially corrected the 2010 mistake.

But as you know in the 'real' World, the later 6 MTs
are doing much better than the DSG F E wise!

One reason I did not choose the DSG is due to lack of steering wheel paddle shift. However, if I am still going to drive a DSG manually, I might just as well buy the real manual.

I guess that's fine if you like to work your left leg.
But when you get old like me (and the S O) perhaps you will appreciate NOT having to work that clutch and still be able to enjoy the benefits of solid choosen ratios that can be changed in nano-seconds.

Are there paddle shifters when you get a 6 MT?

When I want to control my DSG, I use the same hand I would use if I had a 6 MT.
When I don't want to control it manually (Tiptronically) I simply allow it to 'do it's own thing'!

What could be better? I do both depending on how I feel at that time.

You know, when we think about it, it's it nice that we do not all like the same things?

Hehe, if I ever get so old as to not want to use both arms and legs to drive I hope a die quietly in my sleep.

It is part of what makes me feel young! Actually, after looking at the new Fiat yesterday, I think I am ready for a mid-life crisis.

Just out of curiosity, what is the actual service required/preformed at 40K on the DSG? thank you.

Drain and refill the ATF, and change the filter cartridge. Not a huge deal, but the filter is sort of a pain to get at, especially on the CR cars.

That does not sound too bad. Does the torque convertor have a drain or does that fluid remain in suspension? For $400 I was thinking there was an internal hard part that needed replacing. I have been reading through the threads in this section. Looks like we may have a new TDI Sport Wagon by the end of the weekend. I have excused myself from the purchase process to keep the peace in our family. My wife is fine with a stick, but the car she wants happens to be an auto. Not my choice, but the car will be hers to drive, mine to look after. Thank you

There is no torque convertor involved with the DSG transmission.

Basically, the DSG is an electronically shifted manual six-speed transmission
with two sets of clutches, but with no clutch pedal. Clear? If not, see:

Does gas mileage change significantly if I get manual vs automatic?

MPG is consistently better with manual and you usually only ever have to change out a clutch every few years.............Unless you tow heavy loads,which is unlikely here as most towers buy a truck to do that.

13% HST in Ontario. so $440.64, it does suck owning a DSG in that regard.

Can you install a remote start on a TDI Stick? In the market of a TDI Golf and its one of those questions I haven't seen anybody ask yet....


I'm assuming you can't because of the clutch but I'm hopeful someone has found a solution... I'm sure I'd have to keep it in Neutral and have the ebrake engaged.

I was in a similar situation as you, my wife doesn't drive standard and she wanted the option to drive my car. My answer to her was "my Ram is auto, you don't drive it, my car before was auto and you never drove it, my mustang gt prior to that was manual and it was fun as hell to drive so my mind is made up MANUAL!!."
She did ask if I was willing to teach her (which I am).

I also do 90% highway so not too much stop and go.
