We were told on a visit to Gunther VW service that any good synthetic was acceptable for our PD Jetta 2006. We told them 505.01 was required and they told us it wasn't important Syntec was fine. Also told us it needed to be changed every 5k. Needless to say we didn't change our oil there. The service manager said we shouldn't believe everything we read on the Net.
Gunther is about sales, obviously not quality service. I have not been a completely satisfied camper with the service as it almost always requires several go backs to repair the original problem. Sounds like Gunther is the same no matter what state you are in. VW do you hear this? This is where you are lacking, quality affordable service. Please help us help you by educating your dealers on how to properly repair these vehicles. Sticky tape only works for so long. Do the repair once and do it the right way! At least my dealer put 505.01 on the invoice. But, who knows what they really install? That is why I do my oil changes my self now. Every 7500 -8000 miles.

Syntec IS CORRECT for 2003 and before TDIs. TXT is for 2004 and later.
i told them i have a 2004 to start with.

if 505.01 is good enough for a PD its good enough for me. i would rather spend the extra $1 a liter for the best oil then buy just the good stuff.

Wrong Oil Used

GOSSETT VW - Alpharetta, GA
10/20/05 @ 29,290 miles
INVOICE C18410
Note on work order = "Customer States - Here for oil service and don't over fill oil put extra in car" ----- I said in the trunk, and hoped I didn't need to spell out in the bottle in the trunk.
Invoice shows using - (5) ZVW352540S

When I got home and put the 1/2 qt extra on my shelf next to the previous oil change 1/2qt I noticed the label difference right away. Then I noticed the spec difference. A quick web search verified - WRONG OIL. I called and scheduled a re-do the next morning. Only 10 or so miles on the wrong stuff. I have seen the bottles on every change. It just so happens I didn't examine it well when I picked it up. I think they put the extra in the truck, so I didn't see it until home.

At the next change interval I had them note for the records that the wrong oil was used previously and was replaced the next day. It says on comeback they drain and replace. I guess they didn't replace the oil filter, so it was contaminated by the residual 505.00.

When brand new (<10K miles) , I stopped to get a qt when it showed low (while on the road). They hillbilly service people gave me 505.00 and when I refused it, they argued. I left there in haste.

Also note that the new 2.0 TDI (140 and 170 hp) WITH the particle filter need an oil with is certified for this usage...

Use just any 505.01 spec oil could dillute your particle filter..

4 The oil level in the Jetta decreased to just above the minimum mark this week. I went by the local dealer to get oil for a top-up, only 3800 miles on the car. The parts person brought Castrol Syntec to the counter. I stated this is the wrong oil. I saw the SLX on the shelf and I pointed it out.

You gotta look out for yourself with a TDI.

There are two VW dealers in Delaware, don't bring your car to either of them.
The Dover VW service advisor argued with me about the oil required for the PD engine and stated that the oil VW sends him (not 505.01) was sufficient
I called Smith VW in Wilmington, and was told by their service advisor that it takes "casual" oil. It was a female advisor who yelled back to the service bays and never heard the word castrol.
Well, not to argue with you but I "tested" the parts person at Smith and he pointed to a case of TXT. there are some people at Smith that have been there long time and know their stuff. One tech solved a problem in my car but created another but it was a case of mistaken wire where he let a newbie trace them.

I have an '06 NB TDI. It takes 4.5L of 505.01 oil. However,
the Service Mgr. (Scott) told me my car needs 7 Quarts of oil.
Another counter person looked up what my car needs in the computer and came back with Syntec. (Also corrected me to Quarts not Liters)
I had to explain why I was asking for 5L of Castrol TXT 5w40. He says "ok, i guess you want that expensive stuff?"

It was $55 for 5L plus filter.

I dont know this definitely, but I suspect that oil changes at that dealership are not likely to receive the proper oil or amount of oil. Be Wary!
For $55.00 you could have bought 5L of a 506.01 or 507.00 product. Buy online with a filter and take it to them. They should only charge about $20 for labor. I stand there and watch them pour the good stuff in. Also time how long they allow the old oil to drain. Make sure they get all the dirty stuff out.

In 2004 they were using 505-00. At this time they are using 505-01.

Has never heard of 505-01. However, both Overterf and New Century were able to get cases of G052167A2 for me in 2004 and that is 505-01. It is not surprising that New Century is unaware od 505-01 because they never sold diesels after 2003 because of EPA and Caltrans.

I trusted the dealer to change the oil & Filter after the 5,000 mile change & 10,000 change & had the misfortune of them pinch a vacum line & puting in safe mode. They said would take two weeks to fix went to Auto Zone to have put on computer & $10hr parts guy pointed out vacum line & rest computer. after went & confronted them I decided to change my own oil & they did not want to give the right oil after I made a seen on the showroom floor I got the oil I asked for & was told it was my problem if I used 505-01.

If I may..I haven't seen this oil mentioned so I'm asking if it is acceptable.
My service ticket shows Engine oil: ZVW-352-167-Q-DSP and under that is Castrol 5W-30 VW505 01/VW502 00. I called the parts dept who says they no longer carry 505.01 at all and the oil put in my car carries 3 oils-in-1 and replaced the 505.01 as per VW for my car. Any replies welcome.

I dont know if this thread is specific to the PD motors, but I have a 2002 wagon.

Mike Rasor Imports
Lafayette, IN

I went to buy oil for my oil change there on 07-18-07 and they told me they used Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40. I tried tell them that the OEM oil should be the Castrol Syntec, the service guy told me they use that oil in all the diesels they service. I donk know if he was referring to the PD cars as well. So just beware of the place everyone.

And I had a question as well. It is ok to use the newer standerd of oil (505.01 etc??) in my 02? Thanks..

ZVW-353-540-S (5 quarts for $30) on the invoice

The invoice also says ****used synthetic oil****
I will be calling them.....or better stopping to see them tomorrow!! 7000 miles on what I am assuming at this point was the wrong %$%^ oil in my 2004 jetta.

Forgot to note: I took my car here to have the EGR cooler campaign done because I was loosing coolant. As far as I understand the coolant didn't vanish but mixed in with the oil. The oil change was not covered under the campaign. I had to specify to have them change the oil.

Follow-up:
Just talked to the service department, They say the oil was the correct oil and it is 505.01. He even knew it was a PD engine(the guy at the counter not the guy in the oilchange bay!). I'm not sure how to tell otherwise. The part number for the oil I read in an earlier posting I belive sounds like the wrong one.

Since I had just purchased 6 quarts of Castrol 505 01, as I was having my 2006 VW Jetta TDI oil changed, I assumed that the service manager and serviceman knew which oil to use in my car. WRONG! After I paid the high oil change bill and was about 80 miles away on my way to our 2nd home, I noticed the Castrol Oil sticker on windshield saying that Syntec 5W-40 was used; then looked at invoice closely and sure enough...Syntec 5W-40. So I stopped and called the service manager, and you guessed it.....they did in fact used the wrong oil, but service manage said that is what they use in ALL TDI's they serviced, and they did NOT have any Castrol 505 01 oil when in fact I had just purchase some. I hit the ceiling with that service manager, and went on straight home and dumped the bad oil and replaced it with the 505 01 oil. They have lost my business, but I have written the President/CEO of VW of America informing him of what seems to be a standard practice of using Castrol Syntec 5W-40 at many VW dealers across the nation.

Valenti VW network of dealerships in Connecticut is up on the right oil. When I went to buy my filter for my NB, the parts counter rep at Mystic (her name is Sarah and she's probably the best parts rep I've ever dealt with) asked me if I had 505.01 oil to go with my filter. So rest easy, CT TDI'ers because Valenti's has trained their reps to know what's right.

Langan, on the other hand...

Your right, Sarah is very knowledable. I go there for parts for my 03 Jetta TDI. These people are up to date and very friendly.

Are There Confirmed Engine Failures when 505.1 is not used?

It is apparent that there are many TDI running around without 505.1 spec oil in the crank case since so may dealers and owners are clueless about the correct oil.
Has there been any confirmations about engine failure do to the wrong oil being used?

Just curious, not suggesting that the practice is correct.

3 how you know the wrong oil is used - Have service orders showing they used Castrol Syntec then switched to TXT 505.01. At 90K they charged me for new cam and lifters - $2400, month later new injector pump - $1600, we will be discussing in court soon... have requested new motor and reimbursement for repairs caused by their negligence.

VW was more than useless they have not control over dealers.

Dealers are independent legal entities, and the only relationship of note with the importer/mfr, is the sales target. Despite the illusion of security given by branding, customers are not contracted with the name on the plastic signs, but the ****holes who own dealerships. As well the importers know. Oh, how they must snigger when the dealership staff ignore/cannot comprehend/wilfully defy, the TSB's.

Bought my PD from them used, 9000 miles. Luckily there was likley only one service done with the wrong oil. Service Manager quote: "Any good synthetic of the right viscosity is ok. VW has sent us conflicting bullitins, so we just use synthetic." I went home and changed oil promptly.

If it's good quality oil it doesn't hurt so much.. the thinner oil is introduced mostly to improve the mpg when engine is cold..
