Our fellow club member and VW tech, vwrobert51, is aware of a pd engine in Texas which sustained severe damage by not using 505.01 oil. He even has pics and they will be posted soon.
Define soon.

I have an '06 NB TDI. It takes 4.5L of 505.01 oil. However,
the Service Mgr. (Scott) told me my car needs 7 Quarts of oil.
Another counter person looked up what my car needs in the computer and came back with Syntec. (Also corrected me to Quarts not Liters)
I had to explain why I was asking for 5L of Castrol TXT 5w40. He says "ok, i guess you want that expensive stuff?"

It was $55 for 5L plus filter.

I dont know this definitely, but I suspect that oil changes at that dealership are not likely to receive the proper oil or amount of oil. Be Wary!

4 I purchased a spare litre of Castrol 505.01 for our 2006 Jetta from them. The parts guy stated that Mobil 1 synthetic is the same thing and can be used "in a pinch."

They stock 505.01, but they are apparently giving bad advice. I don't know what they actually use in their service bays, nor will I ever.

ekk, go ahead and print this and put the service "manager" to the test: See if he can read English :)

I warehouse lots of supporting doumentation that the dealers all have access to. I can only guess they never read the critical TSBs mailed to them - - I don't know what else to say.

Let me know if this is making any sense

Everyone the following are the most current TSB’s to date to show your Dealer. They replaced the ones DD has been kind enough to display, as noted in the TSB.

ANY TSB IS AVAILABLE FROM VOLKSWAGEN AND / OR AUDI, as a hardcopy or apparently, as I have listed below, courtesy of Drivebywire, since I cannot post attachments directly, as an electronic attachments.

The cost of the first hardcopy TSB is $4.00 each and then $2.00 each after that and VW / Audi usually mail them directly, the same day, through their vendor.

Service Date 9/9/05
Invoice states Casrtrol Syntec

Service Date 1/12/06
Invoice states "synthetic oil"

On both occasions I mentioned the 505.01 spec to the service writer
and was told that they used Syntec. My comment was that I didn't
care what they used as long as it conformed to the spec. This was
before I found TDIClub. For the 20K service I talked to the Service
Manager first and was told that they had changed to a new compliant
oil, but their lube distributor was not able to confirm that the new oil
was 505.01 compliant either. The Service Manager also stated that
even if it was the wrong oil it was what VWoA told them to use so
I was still covered... I bought some Elf and payed an independent shop
to change the oil.

But for how long?? Potential damage (i.e., wear) might not show up until the warranty has expired. Could the wrong oil have caused the damage?

You might want to send VWoA a certified letter (return receipt) outlining the situation, so if you do encounter problems post-warranty, at least you can establish the VW was on notice the dealer was not using the proper oil.

I stopped in to see what they charge for an oil change on an 06 NB TDI and was told $29.95. I asked the service manager what they use for oil and he said "Valvoline Fully Synthetic, it meets the specs for the Pumpe Deuse engine". I told him that didn't sound right and he shrugged.

I said $29.95? really? He said yep.

I've got a funny feeling about them.

But what do I know...I'm just a girl.

Its good to see this TSB - one more piece of evidence to show the VAG-LIST is not a requirement.

What does "conforms" mean though...or are we running into a language barrier between German and English?

Dealer in Tucson, AZ sold me wrong oil castrol syntec, I came back and they exchanged for castrol TXT. I wonder if they make the same mistake when they service the TDIs for the customers.

Syntec IS CORRECT for 2003 and before TDIs. TXT is for 2004 and later.

There are two VW dealers in Delaware, don't bring your car to either of them.
The Dover VW service advisor argued with me about the oil required for the PD engine and stated that the oil VW sends him (not 505.01) was sufficient
I called Smith VW in Wilmington, and was told by their service advisor that it takes "casual" oil. It was a female advisor who yelled back to the service bays and never heard the word castrol.

We were told on a visit to Gunther VW service that any good synthetic was acceptable for our PD Jetta 2006. We told them 505.01 was required and they told us it wasn't important Syntec was fine. Also told us it needed to be changed every 5k. Needless to say we didn't change our oil there. The service manager said we shouldn't believe everything we read on the Net.

So the new 2008's will be out soon and VWoA has failed to educate there dealers about the PD engine. I wonder how or what VW dealers will jack up on the new CR TDI? I also wonder what will happen to resale value as these "damaged" PD TDI begin to wear out. This will greatly effect the long time "diesel last forever" mentalty that has kept the resale value high.

I know I won't buy a PDTDI with more than 30k miles.

Now back on topic

How do you know VOA "failed to educate there dealers " and not that some dealers (service writers, parts people and techs) are not book people and do not keep current on technical matters. This would make it a dealer problem and not VOA..

This may be why the findings are inconsistent from dealer to dealer.

Remember, it all starts at the top at the dealerships.

Real simple- read this thread and you see than service writers, parts, service managers and techs still DO NOT use or KNOW of which oil to use.

Lol. Not being able to read is an excuse! ;) *** If I pay a stealership 80-100/hr for labor I expect a qualified person. Qualified INCLUDES keeping up to date on changes. At the very very least read the repair manual.

Here is how VWoA fixes the problem. A roll call sheet must be placed and posted in the dealership. Every employee must read and sign it with the understanding of 505.01 oil. Then once the sheets are signed - fax or mail them to district or VWoA.
