From what I've read here (from @oilhammer IIRC), the Passat is notorious with the heater core failures, with the working theory being that the high temps from the regen cycles of the DPF "cooks" the coolant, leaving those deposits. Don't know if it's any better with G12evo, but good to know that you've found BMW stuff that's holding up.

Any of you guys change a heater core I’ve done 4 on 13 passat need heat and defrost in Ontario G13 seems to break down and leave these fish scale type flakes in coolant messing everything up I changed to a BMW blue coolant sorry don’t know numbers but had first winter without issues flushed well didn’t turn brown all good so far maybe 50km
Those aren't flakes from a ruptured silicate pouch in the reservoir, are they (if the NMS Passats even had those)?

I think the problem is more about the coolant routing through the egr cooler before hitting the heater core, instead of following the path of every other car, going from the heater to the egr.

I am on heater core 4 and was starting to fail again on 13 Passat when coolant leak( tow truck
leak) i found oil cooler/oil filter housing leaking when removed it was just choked with flakes the
largest dime size down to shards,Thinking time to try different coolant a friend had BMW diesel
SUV I used the coolant spec"d for it. I was told by VW mechanic G13 was VW try at environmental
friendly coolant made of animal viscera but obviously breaks down under heat stress, after going with
BMW blue coolant no problems plus heater core came back to life and its getting close to 50K ago. I filled
cooling system with distilled water ran it dumped it 3 times before going to blue.

So you think the coolant caused the problem?

Hi Jokila: I believe the excessive heat caused by the DPF regeneration breaks down
the G13 coolant and the flakes that appear in the coolant definitely plug up the heater
core.

gen 2 of 12-14 passats seem to be the worse for baking the coolant.

We made it to 80K (before buy back) on our 2012 and coolant temps would constantly be in the upper level 230-235, fans would run after shut down even if no regen had happened.

I've seen cars need maybe a heater core a year. Even after the proper flushing procedure and everything. The only "true" and final way to get rid of that issue is to delete it. No EGR = No flakes. I feel like it defs got worse after the recall and whatnot. Even seeing DPFs go more.

imagine that, lowering exhaust temps by slamming EGR helps NOx.

Yeah - I fully recognize that the policy there is mostly a gimmick, just like their "free shipping", which take 7-10days, and upon which they try to upsell you to "express" or whatever for $10-20.

To be clear, I much prefer your "free shipping option", even without the "lifetime replacement guarantee". ;)
One perk of living in CT.

Their free shipping arrives next day no matter how late I order. I can always just pickup and drop off my returns too! Though, last time I was lazy, and instead paid $20 to ship 10L of fluid back via UPS (worth it as I got $130 store credit back).
