dealer out of DSG fluid

Went today to a nearby VW dealer and they were totally out of DSG fluid - not available anytime soon, they said.
What is a good alternative to genuine OEM fluid?
Its for my 2013 Passat. They had some Liqui Moly 1800 oil but would not sell it to me over the counter and I'm not even sure its the correct fluid.

this is the stuff i run in my DSG, got the car at 87k miles. now at 245.5k

You can find substitute fluids at any of the better part dealers, idparts, fcpeuro, etc. They'll have the filter & gaskets too.

ATF for non DSG automatic. You want the 8100 DCT fluid

I still wonder why they wouldn't sell to him over the counter, like they want to see his federal tranny fluid license.

Because Volkswagen dealers cannot sell non-Volkswagen parts, and transmission fluid is I guess in that category. They may make a special allowance for motor oil though, not sure... although when I was there, the drums we got in of oil did have VAG certifications on them, and were billed out with the appropriate part numbers.

If they sell anything Non-VAG parts, and something goes wrong, then they are liable for selling non-OEM fluid and etc. Basically to just cover them if anything goes wrong. Which I understand.

There was a shortage, (guess there still is) of even DSG O-ring seals. I'm not surprised that there is a shortage of the fluid. Whenever you ask questions, the answer is always "supply shortage"

Oh yeah, I wont' let them TOUCH my car from here on out. I have done all the maintenance myself for the last 10 years, thank goodness. They did the dieselgate fix and a bunch of other recall stuff years ago, no issues with those items. But, these are also the folks that said, when I asked them if I should consider changing the timing belt now after 11 years and 71,000 miles to keep on driving it to the mileage limit (130,000 miles IIRC) and then change it regardless of time. That might also be bad advice, discussed at length in another recent thread . . . .

I'd guess that probably 70% of the parts I buy from my dealer are non-OE - brought in from Autocamping / Altrom. I typically have to request it, but when I was first starting working on my own cars maybe a decade ago and I gave a "whoa!" at the price of like a filter set or something, the parts guy there was already following up with "....or [less than half] for aftermarket - comes from the same manufacturer."

As for the topic at hand, I'm well-aware to only use DCT/DSG fluid, but have always been curious as to what the difference is between ATF and DSG fluid....?

I agree, Autocamping sells basically OE quality parts but when it comes to I guess anyone over the counter, alot of people tend to stay away from selling non-OE fluid because they dont want to deal with any issues if it is the wrong fluid, etc. I've used Autocamping for alot of my stuff because it was the same brand but not stamped VW with the markup.

How does the Rowe oil compare to the Liqui Moly? I see ID Parts has the overflow pipe for $44. I don't remember it being that much last time I bought it. Think I'll just reuse the tube this time. I'm about 15k miles away from a change but thinking I may just change mine to get it back on the 40k mile schedule since I'm almost at 80k now.

DSG is a spec fluid (just like oil), haven't had to replace a clutch pack yet, it goes in for 40k and comes out and i motor on.

If I were trying to make 1/4 mile runs or tracking the car I'd be more concerned about "marketing brand fluids" being uber super special.

I've always reused the overflow "standpipe" in the DSG, i didn't think that was a consumable.

Last time I heard about this brand is that they're not even an oil blender; most likely they just bottle oil or just label readily supplied bottles with their fancy stickers. Not sure for trans fluid but as for motor oil Liqui Moly jugs contain Meguin oil just for significantly higher price. Product itself was described as "average".

LiquiMoly is literally one of the founding companies for specific lubricants, they've been around for longer than most of us have, since the fifties. They are not just a "brand", they are a German lubricant company.

with the Rowe fluids, I can feel the slight bucking from the DSG shifting.

with the LiquiMoly 8100, there's no bucking of the shifting. its far more smoother.

I've run Rowe in 3 DSGs, over DSG 5 changes. While there maybe "better" it meets the specs and keeps our cars rolling, so I'll motor on.

As for Liquimoly from what i've seen of their advertising budget, it is clear indicator they are the best in the industry.
