I think you’re on the wrong website, this is a diesel engine forum, you should check out vwvortex.com.

That said, what do you mean by “dead locked”? Do you mean it’s stuck locked, or do you mean someone installed a deadlock like you’d find on a house door?
If the lock isn’t turning, try putting some oil on your key. You might need a new lock cylinder which can be replaced from the inside of the car.
If the lock turns but doesn’t unlock the door, the module is probably bad, which is also replaced from inside the car. Could be a wiring issue too.
If a deadlock was installed on your door, remove the deadlock.

sorry i should’ve been clearer, I meant dead lock as in when I put the key in to unlock it, nothing happens, when I press the unlock button in car nothing happens, also when I pull the lock upwards and try open it nothing happens.

There are some Threads here in the TDI Club about the micro-switch that goes bad in the MK4 VWs. Back in the day, folks got replacement switches at Radio Shack. I have no clue where to get the switches now.

And, my 2003 Jetta has basically the same issue as yours. The locks come up but the door(s) will not open. Right now, more often than not, I have to open one or the other back doors then reach forward and open the front door.

So, I too need to look into this door issue.

Welcome to the TDI Club. Other than the engine and associated things (and transmission gearing) practically everything in your MK4 is similar to or the same.

Maybe some gurus with first hand experience will chime-in. In the mean time, do some forum searching. You might get lucky. Also, a general Internet search will bring up results and many of them will link you back to the TDI Club.

Here's our master thread on door switches. There are other issues contained within it, although yours may be better addressed in other threads- and we have one for almost every door lock issue you can mention. A search will reveal more, and also check out Chitty's site (myturbodiesel) for Mk4 troubleshooting.

So, the passenger-side door on EU models had key slots on *both* front doors?
North America, we only get them on the driver's door.

Anyway, but a lock module off of Amazon, watch a few YT videos on removing / replacing that module. Set aside an afternoon and get to it. :)
(Having done at least 20 at this point, I can get it done in under an hour, but first time...you're most likely gonna be a little slower than that.)

I suspect the OP's issue is the door is closed and neither handle opens it.

I have had success by disconnecting the short cable and pulling it with needle nose pliers, if that doesn't work the coathanger tool should.
