If it stays this cold we can go ice sailing. I tried it many years ago when I lived in New Hampshire. 70 MPH on three steel blades each about three feet long with your butt about three inches off the ice...FUN!

That is always something I wanted to try....

I'd like to make one of these while I'm living in an area that has such an active group of owners, but I'll feel pretty out of place in a salty RAV4. How often do these happen, quarterly? Maybe next time.

Salty RAV4s are welcome! We're trying to get a quarterly GTG going.

My ex and I used to own a Rav4. What year?

You're on these forums, so you'll feel right at home, I assure you!

Thanks. It's a 2004 RAV4. It was my wife's car until we got a new Escape for her. I didn't want to have 2 car payments since my Mazda3 was not going to be a long-term car so I moved to the RAV. It's FWD with a 4-spd auto but manages to return 22-26 mpg in my DC commute. Pretty good, especially compared to the EcoBoost AWD Escape. Nothing compared to the likely 40 mpg I'd see in a Passat 6MT though.

Are you on the rav4 forums? www.rav4world.com ?

Ours had the V6. About the same mpg, but 270 hp. High 14s in the quarter. It was hers, though.

The new Escapes are very nice. I ended up renting one on a trip and it was a sweet ride. Did suck gas though.

VW really has a hole in their lineup. They need a diesel SUV that isn't $60k!

No, the RAV is not something about which I care enough to read or be part of a community. It's been a fantastically reliable car over 9 years and only 78k miles, but it just doesn't interest me all that much. Its short wheelbase and higher H-point are pretty handy in parallel parking and seeing what the brilliant DC-area drivers have done to cause the latest traffic jam.

I've heard the V6 is shockingly quick. Didn't realize the mpg was that strong. Sounds like a nice combo. Anyway, it's a fine car that does what I need but doesn't give me any excitement. I've really only been passionate about my '98 NB TDI 5-spd and its successor, a '95 E300D. Need a little diesel clatter instead of the humdrum 4-cyl gas soundtrack.

In city driving, the 2.0 EcoBoost returns 16-17 mpg, up to 27 exclusively highway. Averaging around 20 in its 5k lifetime. It does have impressive midrange and up power from 2.25-6k rpm.

That's probably enough of a hijack from me on this thread.

It's looking doubtful that I can make it, mostly due to the 1hr drive each way for me....

...so can we do the next one somewhere around the DC beltway? Granted the scenery won't be as nice as a seaside crab shack, but might be more central.

We do our best to move it around. Last time was up in Maryland.

Last time I started the thread and organized most of it, then due to work travel couldn't make it myself! So I know how it is...

An hour drive isn't too bad - especially late Saturday morning. There won't be too much traffic and it's actually a lovely drive, especially once you get down towards the water.

Hell; I drive more than that every day just to get to work. :D

Unfortunately I am on the board of a youth sports group and we have an event that day so I'm not making this one. Have fun all! Hope I can hit up the next one!
