A friend in H.S. back in NC showed up one day with a brand-new Explorer. Turns out his Dad had patented a switch or something to turn lights on automatically when wipers were turned on. He sold the patent and used the proceeds to buy his three kids new cars.
It was called rain on and we used to install them at the dealership. They sold poorly and were breakage prone. We dropped them after a year.

I think all new vehicles should be required to have windshield wipers that come on automatically with a rain sensor that has an interlock with the headlights...

I hate people that don't turn on their headlights on when they have to use their windshield wipers....some states (like FL) require that you turn on your headlights when you turn on the windshield wipers...
Virginia require lights on with the wipers too. But, there are still a lot of boneheads out there who don't...

The Chrysler Pacificas actually have a menu item in the MFD where you can have the lights come on with the wipers.

Maybe there needs to be a law for "brain on when driving."

I do not advocate replacing proper training and common sense with automation or extra equipment.

why do you want to disable a safety feature like daytime headlights ?
I concur...they are a safety feature...."see and be seen!"

I saw a neat feature on Top Gear last weekend. They were testing a car, a Citroen I think, that turned on the hazard flashers if you stood on the brakes really hard. They only stayed on as long as you are on the brakes. Good idea as far as I'm concerned.

You can turn them on one the MK5, B6 Passat & Eos via VAG-COM

Have you visited this site and the links it provides?

http://www.dadrl.org.uk/

I don't think that clear benefits have been shown for DRL. Given that the NHTSA loves to make rules to justify it's continued existence, this may be why they haven't mandated DRL in the US. Note: I haven't verified this lately but believe to still be the case.

The NHTSA may be exercising caution in light of it's embarassment over mandating CHMSL based on limited data.

Always thought DRLs were not a safety feature.
They may indeed be a safety feature in northern climates like Canada and Scandinavia where you may experience vision problems when there's snow everywhere.

This is the original reason for DRLs.

The reason some manufactures feature DRLs on USA models is so they don't have to send two different kinds of cars to North America.

And another, much more important reason is that the importers don't want to bear the risk of a lawsuit if someone or his/her family sues after a front end collision citing the absence of DRL. Ours is the most litigious nation on the planet, by far.

I've tried to enable DRLs on my car because they are mandatory by the law. As soon as you turn the ignition on, the DRLs are up no matter the parking brake is on/off (Scandinavian mode).

So, let's say my battery is not brand new. On cold morning, it might give me just one try. So I turn the ignition on (DRLs turn also on) and my glow plug time is ~5 secons since it's -30 outside. I give it a crank and... it doesn't start since DRLs have drained the battery :D

I hear you and sympathize. Fortunately the NHTSA hasn't [yet] seen fit to mandate them in the U S.

I have a 97B4. It does the same thing. However, I put in a "euro-switch" which allows the drls to be off when it's in "parking" position. I figure the several 5watt bulbs are less of a drain than the two 55 watt headlights/drls. So, if in doubt, I turn them off. You may be able to do the same thing - I ordered my switch from Germany.

Forgot to mention:
1. I have the Euro switch installed in the factory (I'm in Europe :D)
2. I ignore the DRL law and use my parking lights (those 5w bulbs) as my DRLs.

The dealer will not shut them off due to insurance regulations. When you give your Vin # to insurance company it pops up that you have DRL and you get an insurance reduction.:)

Is this 'insurance reduction' only in FL or nationwide; and do all insurance companies offer it? How much is the average 'reduction'? As I recall, the insurance discount for airbags, when they were not universally installed, was miniscule.

Wow, I gotta find someone nearby to help me do the same thing. My DRL's have to go before the HID kit goes in.

20IndigoBlue02, how far off I-80 are you? I'm in the Poconos, I'd drive down there on a weekend...:)

One good reason to have the lights be fully manual is that when you start up in the dark and your lights come on automatically, you might not think to switch them on yourself. I had a guy pull up by me the other day to tell me that I didn't have any tail lights. Then I noticed that I didn't have any dash lights either, so switched the lights on.

For those of us who don't always have the "brain on while driving" function, I'd much prefer having to turn my lights on manually. I'm hoping to also disable the DRL.

I never understood how people could drive down the road at night without headlights or just parking lights. Some of the hoopties do it to look "tough" during dusk.

I think driving education should be more involved, longer courses maybe, I mean, the large majority of motor vehicle users should NOT be driving. Not even just for safety issues. They cause a LOT of traffic problems especially on highway merges.

I think I burn out headlights more than a car with no DRLs for sure!
