Does anyone know why he is using an AAZ IDI engine instead of a TDI lump?

Good eye... I just read 1.9 Turbo Diesel and presumed... I'd update the thread subject, but no can do.

Perhaps IDI was chosen for simplicity, especially being able to run on just about anything available in the middle of nowhere? Dunno... not my expertise... to say the least...!
