You’re better off buying the GKN joint from ID parts and replacing it on your stock axle (assuming they haven’t been replaced with chaxles already).

Yep - split rather than two pieces... not that I would recommend them

Bailcast CVS18 Universal Split Constant Velocity Joint Gaiter Boot Replacement Kit, Black

I want to get the whole CV axle left and right .
Why? Replacing the part will give you OEM performance. I have over 250K miles on the replacement parts I got from IDparts years ago, The VW axles are way high quality compared to any stuff you buy locally.

You could get the outers (they are the same regardless of side) and do it at the same time, but from my experience it's not needed. I have the original outer on one side. Over 500K miles. Bad outer cv joints will click click click when turning corners.

If you cheap out and get some local store axle you will be replacing it in short order. They will sucker you with the value proposition that is not meant for TDI owners who put on lots of miles. With their lifetime warranty you will be certainly doing a lifetime of replacing their free replacement axle.

Another option, but it's going to cost you some money is getting Raxles. They are very good axles from everything I have read.

I agree , due to time constraints and a mobile mechanic I think Im going with the GKN axles. I'll keep the old ones and rebuild at leisure, maybe

Yes, a Chinese aftermarket axle.

If yours are OE (still haven’t indicated if this is the case), you should remove it from the car and inspect. If the boots look good amd the joints have no play, the issue is likely elsewhere.

If a boot is torn, or a CV joint has play, cut the boot off and clean up the parts inside. If there was play, you should be able easily to see the wear. If the boot was cracked, look for pitting on the balls and wear marks where they ride. My inner joint looked perfectly fine after 245k miles; the outer had pitting and wear.

Then you decide if you need to order just a boot (your joint was good) or order a new GKN joint from IDParts and replace.

2005 Passat Wagon (BHW/5-spd conv, 03T). I keep in touch with the (2) ALH's I sold.
I think you need a 2nd ALH so you can afford to have one down while the other is on the road

Get some junkyard axles rather than new replacements
If you're really feeling froggy, swap the joints on the shafts side to side, then they'll be spinning the other direction and will be "brand new" on the drive side of everything

The right CV axle is shot I believe. . I will not even drive the car at this point. I just bought brand new GKN axles I will replace with . The original axles I will rebuild and sell on the Forum or Ebay, to recoup some of my investment on the GKN axles

Been there done that with the motorcycles , Honda as in car.
Just bought (from my daughter-in-law) a rust-free, originally from California, 2003 CR-V. First Honda we’ve ever owned. Too bad it’s not a stick, but she wouldn’t want one anyway, though she can drive a manual.

the older civics (up to the early 2000s or so) are a lot more comfortable to drive than the A4 chassis cars are
handle better too

Well that’s not going to work for this guy, all my vehicles are manual. In fact you’d be doing me a favour, I wish I could just get rid of my phone 🤣

Why Honda? As in motorcycle, or accord or......

Gen X?

Do you realize the first year for Gen X is 1965? On the top end they are 59 years old.

They would have been commonly driving manual shift cars in high school just like boomers.
